It's known fact that first model of Playstation console is very good CD audio player. But do you aware how good it is? Some audiophile sites comparing SCPH-1000/1001/1002 models to High-End CD players. Some of them even stated that first PSX sounds like hardware worth around 6000$ (yes six thousand bucks). Sound unbelievable? Yes, but a lot known audiophile sites is stating that PSX is more than a gaming console. But this is not over yet. If using soldering iron is not a problem, you can make it even better CD player than Sony made it.

Y'all should thank me for bumping this thread ^_^

I was on the hunt for some 100x series PS1's when I found this thread, lucky me!

I am dying to make my own bespoke audiophile PS1, just for shits and giggles.

Sorry for being late to the party, but i have to agree, Sony indeed put a quality sound chip in the early PS1 SCPH-10XX models, and besides the straight RCA Plugs which creates minimal interference, paired with good quality RCA jacks, its a holy grail in the audio departament.

Sony indeed has a tradition to put the best on the 1st revisions on the PlayStation Family (excluding PS4) :P

As i own a SCPH-1002 (Audiophile Model) myself, i know the true value of the system, so i leave it untouched, as i know the laser die go bad due to the plastic housing on the 1st revisions, easily replaceable with the SCPH-102 laser deck, but even changing the deck from a 9002 into a 1002 ive experienced stutters and freezing,so ive reverted back to the original laser, which still is in great shape. :)

I wonder why you'd have such issues with upgrading the deck.... I should investigate!

I wonder how the PS1's DAC would compare to my dual mono ES9038's - but hey sound is subjective.

I don't own the 9002 anymore, but to this day i still wonder why the Laser Deck from the 9002 wouldn't work properly into a 1002.

I remember Gran Turismo 2 would shutter a lot on the FMVs and would take a while to load. While if i reverted the laser back into the 9002 and vice versa, both units would work flawlessly with they're original decks.

Although people recommend getting a deck from either a 9000 or a 100 Series PSOne for the 1000 replacement, i can't recall why the 9002 laser wouldn't work properly :)

This mod has me written all over it.
Gonna pull my collection out of storage to see if I have a 100x in there.

A 100x is the one with all the expansion ports and rca jacks, right??

Yes, the one with the AV/Serial Ports plus the Parallel Port and RCA Jacks, it should be labeled underneath the console, unless the sticker has been removed or erased :D

A question to anyone that may have done this.
Is it just CDs that uses the audio chip? Or is there a way to mod an input so I can run my own signal through the chip?
With all the digital media these days I don't actually own any audio CDs anymore lol

You can buy nice DAC's (Preamps) that have old crystal chips in them, they'd likely sound the same as the PS1. But to transplant the actual PS1 DAC out is just crazy effort. Not worth it.

If I am not wrong, the idea was actually supposed to be that the early PS was a great audio player... in 1994.
It was and still is a game console at the end of the day, not a high-end audio player.
