PS3 4.85.1 REBUG LITE CFW with new COBRA v8.2 Released

Developer Joonie of Team Rebug has announced today the latest cfw release (following 4.84.2 rex) of the REBUG brand. This is not the iconic REX flavor of PS3 Custom Firmware, which is a hybrid of dex/cex, In order for the creation of REX, the team is dependent and still in search for file's needed for the creation of REX (4.85 DEX PUP). However, they have the LITE version (a CEX based Cobra CFW) ready to go for 4.85 user's seeking a new 4.85 CFW. This is a welcomed update from Team Rebug as the 4.85 PS3 CFW landscape has been a bit light in choices (for 4.85). So having the developer's with one of the best name's in Custom,Firmware development is great to see now as an available option. Also, they have updated the Cobra payload to now version 8.2 & also the Rebug Toolbox has been updated (toolbox addon requires installation in "install package files" pkg is waiting for you there after installing REBUG) You can checkout all the feature's/patche's in the provided list below for this PlayStation 3 Custom FirmWare and then checkout full details/documentation of the release at rebug.me the official website (direct link found at bottom of article).

Also note that 4.85 SPY COBRA CFW has also been a good/stable CFW flavor as well , more details on that release can be Seen here. Also note that SPY Cobra CFW will not be using the latest Cobra v8.2 (without an update) as its debuting here on 4.85.1 REBUG Lite.

CECH2101A. Tried to update from spy 4.85 update shot to 40% immediately then errored out at 77%. Got stuck in update loop. I tried to reboot recovery thought update might work. I was wrong, failed again at 77% rebooted and it hasn't powered on since.

Unit will power on with no HDD and give no storage error. If I put the HDD back in the system powers off immediately with 3 beeps and flashing red light. Tried putting in a different HDD but same result. Sadly I think my nor got wiped.

I do not have a flasher and my original dump was accidentally deleted (didn't find that out till after ). Is there anything that can be done or should I just toss it in the trash?

Also I have another PS3, and I have backed up files from this broken PS3. Can I JB the other PS3 and copy the backup to the new system? Not an actual backup from settings but copied folders (home, game, savedata, and registry file.)

broken bd or bt? I can't remember where it usually fails with that, but I thought it was in the 70s. the fact that the no storage media present message appears is a good sign, but for two hdds not to work, I'm not sure.

Thanks for the feedback. The blu-ray drive on this PS3 has been broken/not working for over a year now. I was using the controller wireless when i first tried applying the update never had any problems connecting. I was wondering about the hdd message. Seems like I wouldnt get that error if the nor is corrupt/wiped.

that error probably wouldn't happen if the core os was corrupted. you'd probably get a black screen then. you need to install nobd firmware now. I'm not sure if there is one for 4.85. iirc, @Joonie said he wouldn't make one for rebug, because it causes a problem with cobra.

NoBD patches breaks Cobra functions to do with PS2 ISO, PSP ISO etc.

Well that sucks. I guess I'll just JB my other PS3. Will I be able to copy my backups, users, and activations to the new ps3 or do I have to reinstall everything thats not an ISO? I will probably just junk the old one because I have no way to install new firmware.

Cant get to recovery, the system wont stay on long enough. I thought about getting a flasher, but after looking on ebay I can get a used system for the same price as the E3 lol. Thanks guys, much appreciated.

I currently have a backward compatible PS3 Unit with REBUG 4.84.2 REXD-REX – Cobra 8.1 – Toolbox 2.03.02. installed. Have the latest multiMan & webMAN Mod also installed & running great.

Can I flash Rebug 4.85.1 LITE – Cobra 8.2 – Toolbox 2.03.03 over this CFW version without any issues and switch back to 4.85 Rebug REXD-REX if it comes out later?

Yes you can safely install this CFW and when REX/D-REX edition released you can install it directly with no additional steps to make :)

just
  • copy *.rco files from decrypted ofw 4.85 pup (/dev_flash/vsh/resource)
  • mount dev_blind fr write permission using webMan or
  • mount to dev_rebug using Rebug toolbox and replace all rco in /dev_rebug/vsh/resource
This is not enought, by doing only what you mentioned you are going to lose the custom text strings of the "rebug package manager" (located in the custom explore_plugin_full.rco)

'tex_psn_big.gim' inside the 'explore_plugin_full.rco' was replaced with the one from FERROX 4.84 CFW by Alexander because there's no such icon in OFW.
You can delete it from the rco... but you need to replace the line responsible to load the icon from inside dev_flash/vsh/resource/explore/xmb/category_game.xml (and category_game_tool2.xml for rebug REX)

*open that xml file in notepad++ and search for the name "tex_psn_big".... and replace it by the default folder icon (dont remember the name but is named something like "tex_default_album" )

You can install any CFWs that have No BT/BD patches to restore your PS3 for now then yes you can transfer your save files to another PS3.

i think ps2 emulation is getting broken on cobra 8.2, some games are not working well, slowdown, spiky poligons... gta4 pal, scooby first frights ntsc, some others work well.

Hi, i have upgraded my ps3 from Rebug 4.84.2 REX/D-REX to 4.85.1 REBUG LITE Cobra 8.2, and now i cannot login to PSN without need to toggle cobra mode off.
With cobra mode turned off i can login to PSN without any problem, but if cobra mode is on and i try to login i get error 80710007.

Is this normal behavior with Rebug Lite?

Your best bet is to use a dedicated CFW tool for disabling CFW syscalls and removing history log files. Use PSNpatch and press :but tri: or the :but r2:+:but tri: combo for webMAN MOD - both perform the same function, but please note that either method is not completely safe and is not guaranteed to shield you from a ban. Signing in to PSN on CFW is always at your own risk.

Hello coldheart, i have tried the combo for webMAN MOD :but r2:+:but tri: but still the same error as long cobra mode is ON !
I used this combo on Rebug 4.84.2 REX/D-REX and had no problem there.

Strange. Obviously you'll need Cobra if you want to play an ISO PS3 game while signed in, so I would maybe suggest trying a different 4.85 CFW - Spy Cobra or Ferrox Cobra are your two other options at the moment. See if the problem persists with either CFW. I'm not sure what else you could try, aside from seeing if the same thing happens with PSNpatch or SEN Enabler on the current Rebug firmware.
