Video CD (VCD) wasn't very popular in USA. However it was well-known in Asia.
I have lots of VCDs and I want to watch them on my PS3.

For those who don't know the VCD format:
It's a mix of ridiculous Audio/Video compression, holds 74 minutes of both audio and video, (just like an audio CD) pressed on a normal CD.
    Resolution: NTSC-352x240, PAL-352x288
    Aspect Ratio: 4:3 Only.

Maybe Movian, but I never tried a VCD before...

I've tried VCDs on Movian, but it doesn't work. It doesn't know the format.

your only options are stock video player, movian and movian embedded in multiman.in theory you could launch homebrew for ps2 on ps3 but i don't think that's well researched especially for video players.

if i were you i'd rip them and if stock video player or movian won't support VCD rips i'm certain there's a way to convert them losslesslly to DVD rip and DVD rips can be played in stock video player and even launched from XMB with webman MOD.

They're .dat files in the disc and you can directly copy them to anywhere and you can watch the content only from that file. Other folders and files are for the VCD players to know where it starts, where it ends, the start of each chapter, video length etc. Those .dat files are actually .mpg files before encoding and they can be easily converted to any other video format such as .mp4.

Of course that solves the problem but I just want to play directly from the disc on PS3.

i know the principles of an vCD.sadly,i don't think that's possible.you could contact movian team directly and request that feature but don't hope for it.

edit: this got me thinking,as i've toyed a bit with retroarch recently.although i don't think retroarch will mount disc directly, maybe some older emulators for ps3 (yabause, turbografx CD) will.both systems support vCDso it won't be too much of an hassle to test it.but i don;t think it will work though. :)

Actually, there's a way to do it.
I won't be using the original CD, but using software to burn these video files to a DVD-R disc that will be formatted as DVD-Video.
There's also some benefits of doing it, for example I can store more than one CD content on one DVD.

And, the process of burning is easy as pie for me. (And I'm sure it's easy to many people)
    I've got lots of DVD-Rs, a 10 year-old DVD±RW drive and a new external burner too.

at that point i'd personally just convert them to dvd iso's and spare the laser in the ps3.i think dvd and bd iso's can be mounted from external drive but it's been a while since i've messed with that.
