WebMAN and webMAN MOD have a control fan utility that enables at boot of the PS3, infact it is set to default when installing so as soon as you install it the fan control kicks in straight away.

If it has never had a thermal paste replacement then yes I would advise that you do it and clean the PS3 of all dust everywhere.

Arctic MX-4 is a good quality thermal paste that does a really good job and is not expensive, it's what I use on everything from my consoles to my PC's. Its even good for overclocking PC's with its carbon based formula and also becasue its carbon based non conductive it won't cause a short if it's aciddently gotten somewhere it shouldn't be so is electrically safe as well.

Or simply go deliding your console.
    Just kidding.
    Do what Cypher just said.
I also used Arctic MX-4 and it's great just as he said mistakes can happen in a opening ps3 session and thermal paste can sometimes get onto the motherboard , so it's totally safe to use MX-4 and it's great.

As for the autofan boot stuff same as Cypher said , just install Webman , goto settings and turn on the Dynamic settings and temperature limits and so on to your liking.

Since your console's a slim after a successful thermal paste change idle temps should go down to 55c-60c by default (the rest will depend on what fan settings you will set) at least or maybe less :) at least around those values , nothing to fear.

As for the rest if you're up for it just the usual advice :
Be careful on removing the motherboard and not applying too much pressure so you won't bend the motherboard because the thermal paste tends to stick the cpu/rsx to the heatsink but if your paste's worn out it shouldn't give you much trouble.
If you do it after your ps3 has been shutoff it makes it much easier since the heat helps to unglue it off it.
Good luck and all the best.
