is there any way to mount bin/cue files and burn with windows internal burning software? I tried with poweriso and ultraiso -- both resulted in the game not working. one was a black screen, and the other seemed to freeze on the "now loading" screen. I wanted to rebackup my games, 'cause they may also have suffered from whatever the problem with img burn is.

You should rather use a Desktop-PC's DVD-Writer than that in a Laptop! The results are much more reliable!

    Regarding your image-drive-request:
    • Virtual Clone Drive
    • DAEMON-Tools
    • Alcohol 120%'s virtual drive
    • etc.?
    ?!?

I've tried daemon tools and alcohol 120% in the past. in fact, alcohol has a special burning method for psx/ps2 games. as for daemon tools, I read something about them being under investigation or something.

I always use Virtual Clone Drive for mounting.

hmm...the results were bad when I tried to mount the disc image with poweriso and ultraiso. maybe I'm being a bit paranoid. I was playing my burned mmx3 disc earlier, and I don't recall any skipping. I'm just assuming that the burns might be bad due to what was happening with anniversary collection. mmx3 is a good game to test, 'cause it can second as a cd, redbook audio.

Could it be that your discs are not of good quality, rather than the burning software? It's also possible that your PS2 is not exactly in great condition, since it's about 15 years old. The oldest sets are going to be 20, in just over 100 days.

I actually tried about five different brands. most of them didn't work. verbatim did, but it had a bad skipping problem on that one cutscene. I played a bit of anniversary collection and not a single skip after using the built in burner.

    About Verbatim...
    Do you have CMC magnetic:
I've many problems from that manufacture.

Maybe you can try Verbatim Taiyo Yuden:
    https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fr...=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_osacat=0&_odkw=Taiyo+Yuden.
    or Verbatim Mitsubishi:
    https://www.ebay.com/sch/80135/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=Verbatim+Mitsubishi&LH_TitleDesc=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&rt=nc&Type=DVD%2DR&_dcat=80135.

Usually laptop burner do not have got best quality (I never got a good result from it, especially for PS2).
I'm always suggesting to burn disc in desktop PC burner at slowest speed (e.g. 4x).
For some burners 4x is optimum, for some 6, 8, 12...16.
If 4x speed fails, at IMGBurn there is AWS (Automatic Write Speed).

thanks. I think I've solved the problem. I was going to use alcohol 120% for ps1 games, since I used to use it. unfortunately, there's a problem getting alcohol to install. it stops at 90%. I think I know why, but that would mean finding a free edition version for windows 64 bit. the free version only seems to be 32bit. the dependencies for it will only install the 64 bit version of the files. I've tried this on two computers with the same result.

I figured out the problem with alcohol 120% free edition. it basically forces you to agree to the install of like 3 apps. I did that, got alcohol 120%, then uninstalled those apps. why does it even go to a gauge and pretend like it's copying stuff when it gets stuck on that screen. what the hell were they thinking!?

If you have e.g. Windows 7 or older why not use ImgBurn?
Here is a link for this tool with some addons, without adware:
    https://www.psx-place.com/threads/imgburn.19292/#post-130708.

Some users with Win 10, have some problems in that OS, so I don't know how it'll work with you hardware.

Scratch that, I've notice that you used ImgBurn before:
    https://www.psx-place.com/threads/best-discs-to-use-ps2.26083/#post-203609.

BTW you can also try OPL for PS2 games:
    https://www.psx-place.com/threads/open-ps2-loader-v0-9-3.13415/.
    Here is recent beta (1368):

thanks. I just burned the same game with alcohol 120%. no skipping and fast loading, so the problem must be with how imgburn is writing to the disc. I'm going to try my 5 or 6 games to see if they all come out good. I'll test them over the next two or three days.

yeah, but I prefer discs with the ps2, especially since this is a new everything.

What is 'a new everything'? OPL? NOOOO, that's a decade old (in October or November)! ;)

Is that game a DVD or a CD?

Regarding CDs: I suggest to use CloneCD (with ClonyXXL 2.0.1.2/5 and Profiler (4) 1.2)!
Don't forget to turn Laser Power Calibration on.

So... To dense the info in one post:

    For every type of game/disc:
    • Don't use a laptop-writer, but a desktop-writer!
    • Don't use RWs!
    • Use high-quality discs!
    • Turn OPC/LPC on!
    • etc.

    For CDs:
    • Try CloneCD (with Profiler 4 V1.2 and ClonyXXL 2.0.1.5)
    • Burn slowly... 8x is fine usually!
    • etc.

    For DVDs:
    • Usually IMGBurn works very well for DVDs
    • Burn at mid-speed of the rated speed-range of high-quality discs... Low quality discs mark themselves to a higher range, than what they are suitable for and thus need to be burned a bit slower... AWS is working well usually!
    • Don't use +R or if you have to, 'booktype' them to 'DVD-ROM'!
    • etc.

On another note: You ( @pinky ) said 'mounting', which is something ENTIRELY different than 'writing an image' (which it seems you intended to say/write)!

@jolek: THX.... He mentioned 'red book audio CD' tho', which is kind of weird...
    IMGBurn is good for DVDs.
CloneCD is the best choice for CDs IMO! ;)

I found one disc that wouldn't work with alcohol 120%. that's mega man x3. it's the music tracks that it gets confused by. they're all bin files with a cue. using imgburn, game runs perfect, no skipping or absent music.

you should be able to mount or burn with windows 10 built in burner, but I somehow remember some sort of flaw with it if you already have a virtual drive.

You still intermingle unrelated things... Burning and mounting are entirely different things...
Windows' burning-support and it's mounting-support are two different (integrated) programs as well...

I also don't see how it relates to what you quoted!

I mean mount the iso on a virtual drive. if you have an app that creates a virtual drive for you, it can screw up windows mounting. I know that mounting is like using the real disc in an optical drive. and, what burning is is obvious. I'm saying windows can do both just fine without a third party app kinda like using ftp through windows explorer, which doesn't work anymore on older systems unless you enable smb 1.0.

It can screw windows-mounting up, correct... but that's still unrelated to the burned disc/result! ;)
