Forgive me for this weird question.

Is it possible to extract the firmware pkg (PS3UPDAT) directly from the ps3? Is it residing somewhere inside the hard drive, or the only way to get it is to download it?

you can download the official firmware here directly from sony.

hfw is modified by the scene and is available here.

if your ps3 is hacked (cfw or hen) then you can turn on "system update debug" from debug settings and that will allow you to store a pup on the ps3 hdd to install from there.

Does the ps3 store a backup copy of the ps3 update pkg after installing it? If so where I can find it?

PUP files are installed in /dev_flash, the kernel files are installed in a LPAR not exposed to the user.

To extract the dev_flash files, download the PUP that you want to view then use:
    https://www.psx-place.com/threads/pupx-dev_flash.17897/

Or PUP View to extract all the raw files in the PUP.

4.86.1 PS3 HFW is available here:

Is easyer to extract the contents of the PS3UPDAT.PUP file in PC, using a tool like this https://www.psx-place.com/resources/pupx-dev_flash.650/

Alternativelly, if you want to make a backup of your flash you can use a filemanager running in PS3, and copy the contents of dev_flash, dev_flash2 and dev_flash3
But this is a bit pointless because the files are the same you can extract in PC from the PS3UPDAT.PUP

And no, the PS3 doesnt stores the original PS3UPDAT.PUP... think in it as a compressed fileformat (like a ZIP), when you install it the contents are extracted but the original file is not kept

well, the contents are copied to dev_hdd1 during install, but you cannot access it since there is no shell and it is temporary sys partition

PS3 stores PUP package in dev_hdd1 but only during update process (first copying there from source, then unpacking, and after that installing). After installation, PS3 clear dev_hdd1 (but I'm not sure if right after installation or on next boot).

You can access to it on PC. That's i.e a way to fix boot loop caused by some problems with unpacked fw.

ManaGunZ filemanager allows to browse dev_hdd1, so you can install a firmware and then inmediatly after open managunz and take a look at dev_hdd1 contents
I never tryed it so im not sure if there is some files inside dev_hdd1 when doing this

Anyway... what i meant is the contets of dev_hdd1 are just temporal and all the files in it are ready to be overriten, and the next program that request to write something in dev_hdd1 is going to delete the previous contents
So the files inside dev_hdd1 are not really stored, because are going to be deleted at some point

@Berion how to access on pc without these cfw hacks?

it is temporary and always cleared, but not if you've already started the installation
now I think of it, hdd1 is part of this -10% free space penalty you get

@haxxxen Access to cache partition without CFW at least having in the past is impossible because You need ATA Key, which can be calculated from EID Root Key, and this key can be retrieved only from decrypted meta loader. But this is CFW & HEN section and I'm often taken things literally. ^^

Size penalty comes from UFS2 reserving in fs table. dev_hdd1 is always 2GiB, even on 4GiB SD card. ^^
