This thread its old, but this might be a handy solution for diagnostics. Ive heard the 4000 Super Slims have some power supply issues, in order to know the root cause, get something heavy like a brick or a vase, and place it on top, if the PS3 doesn't shutdown in the process, then a power supply replacement its advised.

You can use sandungas tutorial on how to connect a ATX PC Power Supply properly, to test it.

I am not a electronic expert nor i claim to be but if the PSU doesn't send 12V, isn't suppose to cut the 5V rail as well? Its all in one PCB. Ill leave @sandungas to get some PSU wizardry!

Well there are people using it and don't have nothing to report, although visually doesn't look good, and this was made more for troubleshooting purposes.

i tired the hair dryer trick but ended up killing one of my ps3... Here is how it went down. the ps3 was on ofw. i mainly use it for youtube and playing online. I decided to clean it beause it was getting clogged inside. I busted it open. I couldnt pry the mb from the heatsink. i was a bit worried now. lol so i grabbed a screw driver and slowly wiggle the mb and heatsink apart. the thermal paste looks hard as a rock. but i was thinking it still work and all i needed to do was put new thermal paste. boy was i wrong. after reassembling it and using it for a day. i got the ylod. so now im searching for a way to fix it... i figured i try the dryer trick but that ended up killing the ps3... so reballing and dryer "fixes" aren't nub proof or permanent fixes.

yeah, I wouldn't trust using the hair dryer trick. a lot of people used that with the xbox 360. not only can it ruin the motherboard, but it can also short the outlet in the wall. I think I remember trying it, since I didn't have a heat gun.

Indeed, reballing and heat gun, aren't permanent fixes, but people back in the day as this issue wasn't very known, people tended to reball them, which its the same as the heatgun method, the solder balls are fine, the problem was with the RSX, which was dead.

By heating the chip, you would actually fixed the chip, but for a short period of time.

But back in the day, the answer was the same, send it to reballing, and shops ripped people off, in a way as they saw fit, but those days are over.

To actually test of the GPU its dead, just apply heat to it, if it powers up, then it needs a full RSX Chip replacement, if not then it can be any other issues, such as CELL BE, NEC Caps, HDD, PSU, etc... but 98% its always a dead RSX, as its the chip that produces more heat and its the most fragile to extended high temperature.

I see, i had a 2504B, till this day i haven't figure it out why it caused that shutdown. If it was a Phat or a 2000 Slim, that would be easy to spot, but a 2500 it's a pain to know exactly what causes it.

when I separate and heat only the PSU with a hair dryer it turns on normal until I open some application like sen enabler then it freezes on black screen and returns to be with the same problem as before.

Sounds to be power supply, or bad flash. @sandungas might be able to help you locate tristate. He is more technical of the hardware side of things.

Sell that thing for parts on ebay
Buy a PS3 that can handle CFW and doesn't have those problems.
    Profit
