    Hi all

I have a PS3 Phat that ive tried installing CFW on 8.48 using a 32GB USB drive. When I go on the option on the PS3 to find the update by storage media I keep on getting the 'applicable data not found' message and its driving me nuts!!!! I seem to have trowled over a few websites, search engines and nothings making sense. Ive even gone as far as removing the partition from the USB drive and that still didn't do it.

    Where am I going wrong?

The usb must be formated in fat32 and mbr not gpt. If that does not help you try smaller usb.
Btw have the right folder structure on the usb?

I believe PS3UPDAT.PUP must be in all caps too.

Mbr? Think that’s the only thing I’ve not looked at tbh. And yes the files are in the PS3, UPDATE, PS3UPDAT.PUP order.

I went into diskpart to remove the partition from the usb if that has anything to do with it.

Does the USB stick show up in the photo/music/video categories? If so then it is formatted correctly and compatible.

Are you on CFW already? Have you converted to DEX using Rebug? If so you might need to use D-REX.

No I’m on OFW atm :/. And I’ll have to look into these different types of hacks.

And no the usb wasn’t previously detectable in music videos photos.

Ah Dex is the developer console isn’t it?

I had the same problem you did when first trying to JB my box. I was using a 16GB USB stick and it just wouldn't show up. It worked fine on my laptop and workstation but no dice on the PS3.
I found an older 1GB stick and that worked on the first try.
Doesn't make any sense, but anyway...

The gpt vs mbr thing is super important.
ps3 does not recognize gpt, and people can foolishly format a usb drive fat32(gpt) instead of fat32(mbr)

I usually use a tool to do it that allows me to choose. :)

To know if it was well formatted copy a image to the USB... then plug it in the PS3 and try to see if the device icon "pops up" on top of photo/music/video category in XMB
One of them (i think is photo) allows to "browse" the contents of the USB device and you can see if the image you copyed is there

Thats the first step to know if your USB stick is compatible with PS3
But additionally there are some USB sticks that are not compatibles with a firmware installation... this is something you will know later at the time you try to start the firmware installation

PS3 (and PS2) are a bit picky with USB sticks... as a general rule, the most compatibles are the most simples, and this uses to match with the most olders you have at home (that didnt used to have much capacity)

The capacity is not decisive thought, is just it can be used as an indicator of his age... the point is if you have at home a USB stick with something in between 500mb and 8gb most probably is going to work fine with the PS3 (because most probably is old), and you could dedicate it to the PS3

    Middle English alert!!
I "shall"...love that word along with "thee", "thine", "thou" and "ye".
I'm serious and not mocking you...I'm a fan of Middle English and especially Old English..what the Angles and Saxons spoke.
I rarely ever see it used so I dig it when I do.

Ok, if needs be I’m probably gonna be using an external hard drive to put all the apps & games on eventually as well. I’ve not really come across Middle English I never use words like Thou Art etc I’m not that old fashioned haha !!!

Whatever floats ur boat I guess haha

Ok I’ll see what’s what with it.

And tbh I never use the word ‘shall’ that’s rare for me.

The capacity is not important. I use my self usb Keys from 2 to 64 GB Usb3 and no problem so far.

i have like 15-20 flash drives from at least 10 years to recent usb 3.0,i'm yet to find one that doesn't work specifically on one machine and not on another.it's always formatting or hardware issue.

I don't know what the problem was, but I had to delete the partition, then rebuild it. I took everything off of it before I did that. after doing that, it worked both ways. I also tested it with the files back on the flash drive. it worked then as well.

Just to clarify now. I’ve finally got round it in the way I’ve got 4.84 HFW detected. Go to install that, the install completes, then the ps3 searches for updates then the console restarts. I’ve then looked on the system information which it says it’s on version 4.84. Is that still OFW?

there's no indicator other than the version.txt. that will tell you what you're about to install, but system settings will still say 4.84 no matter what you're installing.

HFW or MFW is essentially the same as OFW. You could install OFW 4.84 and then HFW 4.84 in recovery mode, and it would fill both ROS areas with 4.84.
