Have you ever opened it up and changed thermal paste or anything? It'd be nice to see some pics of the inside to see if there is anything different on the inside of it. I just don't understand how you bought it "new" and ended up with the front panel from a developer ps3. Pretty cool either way, maybe Sony goofed and put the wrong case on.

Is imposible to buy a debug playstation in a normal shop
The "test" is either an sticker, or someone from your familly replaced the lid

Btw, the lid of the PS3 fats can be replaced without removing the warranty sticker... is needed to "force" the lid a bit/lot (to the point you are going to feel that is about to break) until it allows to access this screw

It could be a pre-production unit sent out to journalists, since the review samples also were CECHA01s, just a few months from launch, so perhaps there were some of them with "TEST" embedded on the shell like the DECHA00As, and sent out to journalists, like PSM3 Magazine for example, but the shell was nornal, but having "TEST" on the lid, perhaps is an older pre-production unit, older than 8/9 months from the 2006 launch, the close launch pre-production units are just normal PS3s but with retail Firmware less than 1.00, debug features are not available and they although they run backup review copies, or as the lads were saying, someone just slapped a DECHA00A lid into a A01 and called a day, the warranty sticker can be easily removed with heat and carefully peeling, and re-inserted back.

But if this CECHA01 is a genuine pre-production unit, the firmware praxis should be lower than 1.00.

Also to point out these pre-production units apparently had some sort of special firmware, the version is unknown, but it looks lower than 1.00, no Debug features were present, however, the coldboot was delayed, from the sound timing, the orchestra tune was slightly different "additional instruments" , the gameboot or "PLAYSTATION3" chime is non-existent, and the consoles buzzer doesn't beep at Startup, only on manual shutdown.

There is no way he has a preproduction unit. His Build date is March 2007 which is very late for a cok-001 system. My decha00a is build date October 2006, min downgrade praxis 1.00. I’ve never seen anything earlier than October 2006

I spoke with my wife about the ps3 and she remembers sending either the ps2 I had or this ps3 back to sony for repair at some point I wonder if something happened at that point? she just bought me a ps4 that's the only reason I even noticed the lid said TEST.

Look at what was said earlier and see if you can remove the lid to take a pic of the motherboard for us to see if there are any other goodies inside. I can post a tutorial if you think you are up to it?

also if you have been using this unit since new and have never opened it up for a cleaning or had and fan control installed through cfw you should really consider giving it a clean and fresh thermal paste if you expect to keep this ps3 running for any longer

Did he posted a picture of the label i didn't saw it, but yes Pre-Production units are 2006 Variants, not 2007, we are talking March/May or late July 2006, months before the November release window, but even that Pre-Production Review Samples weren't supposed to have TEST written on them, someone must have changed the lid, the warranty sticker is easy to peel off and put it back with a bit of heat and steady hands.

All initial debug units use prefix DECHA00, the only differentiation is the final letter so DECHA00A is USA/Canada AV test/debug and DECHA00J is Japan version. All DECHA00x are made in Japan. Mine came with APS-226 and nidec 15 blade fan which is very odd seeing as all my other CECHA01 from October/November 2006 have ZSSR + 19 blade NMB fan. They were all virgin consoles so I know what I say is accurate. All are COK-001 main board but of course DECH has option and hardware to disable HDCP

hard to make out but I attached image of DECHA00J label for reference

They exist but incredibly rare. It’s estimated that 5-10% of launch models were made in Japan, the vast majority made in China. I have a Japan build CECHA01 but no production date on it.

Place your open hand on top of the lid, and try to slide it laterally to left, and tell us if it moves a bit
This is just an initial check to see if the lid is a bit broken
