Bro don't get your knickers in a twist there was a bit of humour in it ,maybe lost on you.
Stick to dex until you learn what dex means/does.
Interesting... OK then it sounds like it's just plain best to be on Dex Rebug. So would that be the "D-REX" version? So many acronyms... it's hard to get them all straight.
no,no need to covert to dex.just flash regular rex and don't install included rebug toolbox from packages, download full version from official rebug site if you have fat backward compatible console because you'll be able to toggle software and hardware ps2 emulation.
No I got that it was an attempt at humour. And if you had at the same time actually said something useful about what Dex or Cex actually are or what the differences were, it might have even been funny. But cracking wise without offering up anything constructive, is just irritating.
I'm simply trying to educate myself, but nearly all I find are poorly written "tutorials" that are missing important details, claim to be for "noobs" but are clearly assuming quite a lot of pre-existing knowledge, or read like they were written by 14-year-olds. The world of CFW is highly complex, but it is still possible to simplify it to the point where someone with "average" computer/technical skills should be able to work with it with a very low probability of something going horribly wrong (let alone someone with above average skills, which I actually do possess). So, people like myself come to a place like this to ask genuine questions in their quest to learn, and instead of helpful answers they get half-answers, puzzles, and even ridicule. I could just stick to googling every last thing on my own but - silly me - I thought maybe there would be people eager to help shortcut that process for someone currently stuck in a place they themselves had once been.
I guess it's off to Google once again...
DEX consists in converting you PS3 into a Debug station of sorts, if your looking to play games right from a rip of the disc then stick with Rebug REX
OK now we're talking. Thanks!! Sounds like I don't need DEX then. Or are there other features/benefits that I might want at some point?
And I'm apparently CEX right now since that's the CFW I installed. Do I have to do something to switch to DEX? Or just install new CFW?
there's a video how to convert from rex to d-rex on official rebug site.
i really don't think that d-rex will ever do more than rex version that will benefit end user.
DEX is mainly for game developers for debugging their games, I myself have not found a use for it & I have been in the PS3 jailbreak scene since before we had CFW way back on OFW 3.41
Not trying to bother anyone here (especially since I've gotten so much help already), but how do I make the fan speed stay on manual?
Best way would be to use webMAN or webMAN MOD
That's just it, though. I used Webman to set it to manual, and then I saved, restarted, and it just goes back to SYSCON.
Check the box just above that "enable dynamic fan control".
Oh, okay. I'll try it.
Okay, that worked, as I can hear it now at 60. But my question is, will increasing the fan speed hurt anything at all? More importantly, what exactly is it about CFW warrants the need to increase fan speed in the first place?
Take a look here http://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/System_Firmware
That ones are like the "families" of firmwares, all that ones are official and intended to install in a specific PS3 model
CEX is the most common, can be installed in retail PS3 models, like the ones you could buy in a shop
DEX is for the debug PS3 models, you know, when an game company is going to develop a game, then they calls sony and buys some dozen of this ones (for a high price) and sone gives a license, together with the SDK and support and such
The PS3 has identifyers that tells which type is the PS3, officially you cant install a DEX firmware in a CEX PS3 (neither other way around)
The scene found a way to change that identifyer to convert a CEX PS3 to DEX, this is called a CEX2DEX convert, and is considered risky (but can be done easilly from rebug toolbox) because the are when is stored that identifyer needs to be rebuilt and is encrypted, etc... if something goes wrong you can have a brick... and in worst scenario if you dont have a backup you can lost all identifyers of the machine and this is a full game over
A differet approach is rebug though... this firmwares are an hybrid of CEX and DEX and there are two variants
-REX installs on CEX PS3 models
-DREX installs on DEX PS3 models
In both of them you can use the "rebug toolbox" where you can select: CEX or DEX
When in DEX you can see some additional icons and functions available in XMB, most of them are going to overwhelm you (in the same way does to me, i dont use DEX either) and are going to confuse you
So basically, for a newcomer is better to stay for a time in a simple CEX firmware, and ignore some of the features that comes with actual custom firmwares (such plugins) because is going to be too much learning
I think is better to stay for some months doing a very basic usage of your CFW, play some games, read forum news about released apps and install some (and be carefull, some stuff released is risky because implyes doing changes in flash and that could take you to a brick), etc... basic stuff
Excellent, thanks. Clearly I don't need Dex, I'm happily running with Rex Rebug now but will likely never need the extra features.
Now if I could only get Webman Mod to rip games and act as an FTP server, I'd be set!
I've always found it easier to use multiMAN to rip games
Yeah I might end up going that way. I just liked how Webman was integrated instead of being its own app but... ultimately it's about what works.
Some games take a while to rip (thousands of files) so be ready to wait on some
