In one action I replaced coldboot.raf with one I made of just a solid black 1920x1080 image using easystatic RAF converter or whatever it's called, but I also replaced impose_plugin.rco which I unpacked using rcomagegui edited a couple lines of text in the English XML and repacked using 'None' header compression since that was selected by default. I can get into the recovery menu but the options do nothing but result in a black screen after restoring system defaults, as it does this before formatting.. any suggestions? And any ideas which action caused the issue so I don't do it again?

Sorry for posting so much lately I'm just trying to get something done and keep hitting roadblocks..Ps3 is easily the hardest and most confusing console I've worked with thus far.

I thought the recovery menu only supported installing OFW official firmware? If so, download version 4.82 from here and install. (I saw another comment so i thought you were installing rebug)

if you've already tried that then i'm not sure

using the wrong compression for an rco would probably cause a soft brick. most of the files (all rco, coldboot, wave, icontex, and I think sprx) use zlib. you can tell since zlib will say 78 DA iirc in hex followed by a third byte that's the level of compression..

PS3 RCO files uses "header compression" (in zlib) since firmware 1.60 or so (not before)
    http://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/Resource_Container_(RCO)#Versions

And one of the problems of rcomage is when you extract the contents of an RCO... and is generated a main XML (for rebuilding purposes) it doesnt stores the original "header compression" type

So when you try to rebuild it... rcomage doesnt knows what to do with the "header compression"
    Is optional to use it
