Hey all, I'm a relative n00b with PS3's and modding them, but not to modding consoles and homebrew in general. I have a few questions and finding info seems to be difficult. I'm basing all my info on this guide currently. Feel free to skip down to the questions, I didn't mean to write so much lol. Also I attached some pix for... well I guess for fun really.

I just got a 1st-gen PS3 (CHECHA01) on stock firmware 4.84. It was kinda on a whim because of my buddies (we all bought in). The place where I got it has a bunch of other slims & newer fatties too, and I'm still in the timeframe where I can easily take the PS3 back for an exchange, but (aside from modding capability and certain hardware differences) it's not clear what benefits there are between different PS3 models. After looking into things, it appears that original-gen fatties only really have the benefits of:
    • Being easier to mod
    • Having PS2 hardware built in
...but with the detriments of being a huge risk for YLOD'ing, having very old hardware in general, and I already know I'm gonna have to take this shit apart for some cleaning (and probably some modding) because it was burning up after being on for like 2 minutes earlier. SO, my questions:

    1. Is there any objective benefit to having built-in PS2 hardware?
Once I install CFW I should be able to run PS1 & PS2 ISO's right? I still have physical copies for almost all the PS1/2 games I care about, but being able to make ISO's for backups or just run those to preserve the disks would be really convenient. Any model that can have CFW installed can run PS1/PS2 ISO's from what I can see, is that right? It does always feel nice just being able to pop that disk in though...

...then again I'm already gonna need to use virtual PS2 memory cards or find some obnoxious workaround for transferring my old saves for the games where it matters. The store where I got the console mentioned some PS2 memory card adapter thing, I should probably look into that.

    2. Does any of the other hardware stuff matter?

The extra USB ports are nice, but realistically any more than 2 is overkill unless there's something I'm not considering—maybe extra spots for keyboard and mouse? Will that be useful? Any other peripherals to consider? idk

Everything else just looks like additional slots for media cards and shit. I assume I'll primarily be using the internal HDD (or an external/networked drive) for games, so I don't know what benefit any of this stuff would provide.

    3. Is this shit too old to last?
As far as the age, most PS3s are already old as shit. Is there a big difference getting a newer model? I saw something saying the best thing to do with a new PS3 is immediately open it, clean it and replace the thermal paste. I also saw something about airflow mods and controlling the fan speed. I'm willing to do all of this, but I want to make sure I'm using the best model first.

    4. Any Linux or software limits?
Is Linux relegated to the original Gen1 PS3's only or not? Are there any unexpected issues/software limitations I'd find on a newer PS3 model, as long as it's still jailbreak-able?

    5. Where's the homebrew?
Running backups and loading savefiles will be all good and useful and shit but where's the cool stuff people are developing for the PS3? I assume some is in this forum. Any other good sources?

Any help is appreciated. Sorry for the novel lol.

I wouldn't trust an older phat. those things are about as poorly made as the older 360s, and you know what happened there.

That's actually horrifying enough that I'm surprised I didn't hear more about this at the time. I guess people were too high on the hype train back then. That said, I do wonder if there's any degree of collector's value for this thing, long term. Probably how many ever decades from now they mostly stop working and the PS4 is long forgotten.

Isn't a good portion of the hardware replaceable once you mod it, though? I at least saw that about the HDD and optical/BD drives. What's typically the point of failure?

If I do try to exchange this thing, It's looking like one of the older slim models will be best. Aside from ideally getting like, the oldest 320GB CECH-25XX, is there anything else to consider with age besides which firmware update it's on? Any significant hardware/firmware advantages or disadvantages?

Sorry but your post title sounds like a porn video title :)but I really think you will be better with a slim console. There's gonna be fewer PS2 compatibility iirc but that won't be a matter I suppose. About psx ISO, you can play 99,9% on either

1.yes.aside from far better compatibility BC and semiBC models have better performance in ps2 games and that's all that matter imho.
2.no,not really.other than some cool wheels i didn't saw any really useful accessories for ps3,but i'm not an authority on them so your mileage may vary.
3.no.most important things are to delid it and to change psu if your ps3 has zssr one (initial one).but if you can simply exchange it if i were you i would try to find cechb as cechb would more than likely have aps 226 psu which is fine really,or.most models would eventually have their caps begin to fail, but that isn't to bad of an thing to fix.
4.it isn't.only requirement for linux is to be able to install cfw.but, other than to fool around there isn't too much useful stuff on it.
5.stick to official threads on this forum and brewology site.

    1. Not really, only thing would be better compatibility but it's not worth it, then just get a PS2 instead.
    2. No the extra hardware is just a waste in my opinion.
    3. A FAT WILL DIE! eventually, so my advice is to get a Slim as they run much quiter, they look a hell of a lot better + you can still run CFW on them if you get a 2000 or 2100 series. You can run HEN otherwise but CFW is much better ;)
    4. No, as long as you have CFW you can run Linux, afaik I have never heard of anyone running Linux on HAN or HEN as it should not be possible.
    5. It's right here, most things can also be found on Brewology

yes,it's worth it just for the ds3 if nothing else.also,ps3 have much better audio and video DAC,clearer image even on rgb/component...there's also matter of ps2 lasers and network setup.i can go all day listing why ps3 is better at all things than ps2.only reason to bother with ps2 is if you really want to play on original hardware,in all other cases ps3 and pc are way better and easier.

    edit:

all ps3 with traditional caps (that's including slims) will eventually fail.as i've said that isn't to tough of an fix and would't cost too much if you don't want to do it yourself.slims and nonBC fats are the worst option imho, they have all of the negatives (traditional caps,IHS's) and none of the benefits (tantalum caps, direct contact on the RSX core,BC) especially latter slims that can't even be jailbroken.with HEN however that's pretty much irrelevant nowadays,so there's only question if you play enough ps2 games to justify getting and restoring BC model.

The phats are good systems and totally worth it. But I suggest deliding the system. I have had one for years and no issues once I did that. I also upgraded the PSU and the fan to keep temps down. Mine runs a temps just like the slim after that. As long as you do this before you get YLOD your good. Sony just used crappy thermal paste and went over the system being quiet over long term viability. Here is a link to mine with the parts you need to do this. Once it's done you will totally enjoy it. Another great thing about these systems is you can use OPL for the PS3 to run PS2 ISO files from USB something none of the others can do. All other systems have to run ISO from internal.

No guide really needed bud just mount an OPL ISO then plug in a HDD. You can even load games from SMB share over network this way and launch PS2 homebrew like this as well.

I'll get one together but if you can't mount an ISO then you probably should not have a modded system. Then it's copy and paste the PS2 game on a HDD.

Are not easyer to mod btw, the biggest problem is the first PS3 models have a NAND flash type chip (soldered in the motherboard)... actually are 2 NAND chips
If at some point you brick the firmware then the only way to fix it is by using a external hardware flasher, and the installation of flashers in PS3 motherboards with NAND chips requires some high precission soldering with good equipment (so you need to buy a bit expensive equipment, and requires some soldering skills and practise)

All PS3 models can read and play PS1 games just by inserting the original disc in the drive
Only the CECHA,B,C,E can read and play PS2 games just by inserting the original disc in the drive, and have near 100% compatibility with the whole PS2 games
The other PS3 models cant play PS2 games from optical disc... because the emulator they uses internally is different and doesnt supports optical discs

And yeah, you should buy one of that USB MC adapters, is the most convenient way to export/import PS1/PS2 saves in PS3 and PC too, but is not really a requirement because there are PC tools you can use to rebuild them to different fileformats

The card readers are nice in concept, most probably nobody uses hem nowadays but in latest managunz versions it has been added support to play game backups from them, and this unlocks a feature i like
You could buy a 32gb SD card, copy a game in it and play it until completion, when you are done with it delete it and copy a new game... and so on
This way you have the game on a external device, but is actually a flash storage (very relliable) and is very low power
Anyway... you can do mostly the same by using a tiny and modern USB flash drive

Keep in mind though, the memory card readers are connected to the southbridge by using an intermediate USB HUB chip... so technically the speed of the memory card readers is the same or lower than USB (most probably lower)

Hardware wise, one of the things that matters most is sony was constantly reducing power requirements of the motherboard, and eventually removing some components. Most of that removals was nice, they was reducing manufacturing costs but they also made the motherboard better in every revision
Just look at the watts of the power supplies, the first PS3 models had 400w and last slims was around 200w

There are other parts of the PS3 that doesnt follows this rule though... most notables are the heatsink and fan that can be critizised a lot, but overal they was reducing heat and fan noise too

Is fine, but having one of them working in "healthy" conditions is hard, there are some people in this forum that have some and did some manteinance to them and are working fine

Biggest problem is you should remove the IHS's (the metal squares) on top of CELL/RSX, and thats dangerous, is the kind of thing if it goes wrong is going to kill the PS3 entirelly and is imposible to repair it

The limitations to install the official linux is because is needed to downgrade to 3.21 firmware (as far i remember). There are many PS3 fat models that allows to be downgraded so low, so this feature is not exclusive of CECHA,B,C,E

Not sure at your interests, but i guess if there is soemthing worthy to be discussed soon or later there will be some thread in the forum talking about it

Guys, holy shit. Thanks for all the replies. Sorry for late response, I had a bunch of shit pop up and get me really busy all at once. I feel like I got WAY more than everything I need at once just in this thread lol, I really appreciate everyone being this thorough and chiming in.

I'm too smitten by this thing, I can't exchange it. I'm probably just gonna go the hard route and delid this chubby buddy. Really excited to basically turn it into a full media machine.

And for a select few of you... how you gonna say this baby i'nt a cutie (blame the red DS3 on my roommate though):

if you really want to do it yourself i'd strongly advise to get first a couple of dead boards to practice,at it's almost a guarantee that you'll damage the mainboard on first couple of tries.
