Hopefully I can offer some encouragement, I had the same issue with the very first board I worked on. I messed that board up trying to get them off, eventually getting them off with a heat gun. the NEC replacement did work. They are a PAIN. You just keep going even when it feels like something...
I would start with the RSX. Start with the top side(the side under the cell and rsx) replace those two and see how that goes. The RSX takes a beating on most systems. Good luck!
Alright! Another Nec replacement success story.. so far. The last ps3 that arrived in the mail was the one that worked for me. (24 USD!) the replacement fixed ylod right away. I replaced one NEC on the RSX and it booted right up, RSX was at 67c idle. Thought it was kinda high... installed CFW...
Its a A01 phat... tried the penny trick to add some pressure to the RSX and the CELL. No luck with that method but I haven't tried pressing my finger to it. Don't have the tools to do a full RSX/cell replacement or reball even though I have spares
So I spent this morning redoing all the nec on the RSX... same result. Penny trick didnt do anything for me. I didnt do a proper reflow but... Its not worth it for me to reball, since the unit was so cheap. Kinda bummed it didnt work....BUT I do have another in the mail that does not have YLOD...
My journey with this repair continues... I jacked up my cecha01 board by dropping an exacto knife on it after cutting myself... FAIL. I bought another YLOD ps3 off ebay and it arrived yesterday. Tore it down and replaced one NEC on the RSX. The system no longer has ylod!
BUT it does have...
Hello all, After reading through this entire 88 page thread this morning I feel comfortable attempting this myself.... fingers crossed. I have a Dead CECHA01 motherboard I am going to practice on. I dont see any reason why this shouldn't work, but I am attaching a pic of what I plan to do...
