4.93 EVILNAT (Cobra 8.5)

PS3 4.93 Evilnat w/ Cobra v8.5 - (CEX/PEX/D-PEX) 4.93

I am by all means no expert with how PS3 works under the hood. That being said, the PS3 is still heavily utilizing the core OS, kernel, and configurations written for the original PS3. These CFW teams (really just @Evilnat at this point w/ the help from various people across this site) have just added layers of customization on top of the original build and various modifications to existing files.

Most modern OS's still require a reboot to install software updates, and in many cases will boot into another partition while it installs critical files that cannot be written when the kernel is in use. PS3 does this when installing via PUP files so that the critical files are not in use when they are updated and utilizes Sony's built in update system.

If you want a CFW that no longer relies on Sony's PUP update system, something would need to be written from scratch (I assume), and I don't think that interests anyone or would be beneficial.

Some of the smaller 4.91.2 Beta changes that were being put into place were simple modifications that could be written without requiring the entire OS be re-written to flash memory, which is why @aldostools tried to capture these in webMAN Mod as updates that don't require an entire flash (some of the updates included patches to the critical underlying files so those specific Beta patches had to be installed via the PUP regardless). Not sure if Aldo continues to plan on supporting that update model with 4.91.3 Betas but I for one would welcome him to continue so I don't have to fully flash my PS3 for every incremental update. IIRC PS3's have a limited number of flashes for these chips before they stop working / create bad sectors.

Long Story Short, EvilNat could figure out a different way to publish some of the smaller changes outside of PUP if he wanted to, but eventually the CFW will probably need to write critical files for changes he is working on so I assume he would rather make sure PUP is working with each released Beta.

If anyone is more knowledgeable than me with the underlying PS3 kernel, OS or hardware, feel free to revise and correct any of my assumptions above.

Ok I guess you mean like read-only mode where read/write access is locked down in linux or android with the bootloader for root access similair to the ps3 dev/bind or dev/blind or whatever it's called for certain folders & it mirroring folders in virtual memory, so the firmware is a combination of ram flash & hdd storage?

Hello everybody I have a very old rebug firmware from 2012 , don't know if it's cex or Dex but there is a utility that says it changes between them... My question is if I want to update to this latest firmware can I just download it and update to this evilnat firmware copying the pup to the folder and install or it's not so easy :-) ?

I've buyed a 500gb 7200 rpm hdd, and i'm using 4.91 evilnat cfw. All games works ok, except with gow3, with sound desync and stuttering, using the ISO format. Tried USA and ASIA regions, same problem.

With 5400 rpm hdd, no issues. Is it advanced format 4k related??
Any suggestions??

Guys, I'm new to this homebrew stuff on PS3, just bought CECHA with HW BC for PS2 and installed 4.91.2 EVILNAT (Cobra 8.5). Everything happened smoothly but I've got some questions:

I've installed webman from usb flash drive (mbr/fat32), no problem. But when I connected my external drive (mbr/ntfs) with battlefield3.pkg (12+gb) it doesn't see this pkg file, I had to go into webman, copy this pkg file on console hdd and then I was able to install it.

Weird, I have a Kingston SSD 480gb installed it through ISO as well and had no problems with the gowIII. Perhaps it is a hardware issue, if someone has another 7200rpm hdd they could run a test for you. I suspect it doesn't happen to every 7200rpm… I think I have seen people running gow3 with a high rotation hdd and having no issue.

I have updated xai_plugin with the recent changes:
  • [XAI] Added support for CFW 4.84 DECR
  • [XAI] Merged options [Enable/Disable TrophyUnlocker] in [Toggle TrophyUnlocker]
  • [XAI] Merged options [Enable/Disable PSN Protection] in [Toggle PSN Protection]
  • [XAI] Updated Import Licenses to rap.bin option
  • [XAI] Updated Export Licenses to rap.bin option
For those who have an old version of my CFW, install the full CFW, for others who have a more recent version can update xai_plugin (ONLY FOR PEX!!)

try this : delete the iso. and copy it again to 7200rpm hd. if not works try to convert the iso to pkg and install it. for save use apollo for backup it

Hi, I'm on CFW 4.91.2 final and I would like to report a bug with the game Tekken Hybrid BCES-01454. The game is a disc with a movie, when I open the game with the official disc it works perfectly, but when I make a backup of the disc in . iso the cobra playload does not recognize the movie in the video section. It shows me a message that tells me that the disc is wrong. The video section of the discs cannot be played.

Does this happen to anyone else?

I've tried opening the . iso in dec or enc (with a . key file) and the same thing happens to me. I only read it from the official disc.
