EDIT: I see that's the firmware issue. Can you tell me what kind of PS3 model that you used right now?

either way only thing that he can do himself is to check the hardrive.if he has nand console better still is to simply try new known working hdd and/or test existing one on pc with good software like hdd sentinel.if he doesn't care about the data he can just simply rewrite the whole drive with zeroes or ones and that if the hdd is stable will force it's controller to mark troublesome sectors to spare area,and he can just format it in the ps3 and reinstall firmware.
