PS3 Hen 4.85 Help!

Hello, I wanted to ask an important question. I currently use ps3 hen 4.85, I wanted to update to 4.88 but I can't put the hen because my ps3 disc player is not working, and I heard that the ps3 can brick if I do that. I wanted to format, remove the hen entirely, update to 4.88 and then put the hen. Is there any risk of giving up? Thank you very much in advance!
 
if your BD disc drive is broken, then don't update. If you try, you'll probably end up in a boot loop as the firmware installation will fail when it tries to update.

But like, what if I want to stay on 4.85 but only format the ps3 then put the hen back on 4.85, is there any way I can continue on 4.85 and format only the ps3? Can I do this or is it not possible and is it risky? Appreciate!

AFAIK you can "restore" the ps3. this will delete everything and reset settings to default. it is in recovery mode and the system settings on xmb.

BUT if you remove the hard drive and format it, it will ask you to reinstall the last update when you put the drive back in. and that will cause you to get caught in the boot loop.
 
Super slims have the drive controller on the mobo, so there's no risk in updating while the drive is damaged. You can even update without the drive at all. If you want to try it without any risk, just grab a different HDD and put it in the console, aand a 4.85 PUP, then update. If you're having issues with your wifi/BT, then story is different.

I get it, I'm terrified of doing that.
 
I don't think that this will create a problem in updating as the daughter board is attached with the mother board in super slim model.
If the board was faulty, u would have got black screen while launching any homebrew or games.
Like Elgris said, to be sure grab a new HDD and install 4.85 on it and then u can proceed for HFW 4.88 and Hen.

Is there a step by step on that? I just want to remove everything but without updating the ps, would I format in recovery mode?
 
@ElGris and @Sam2627 are correct. (i suppose that if the daughterboard was damaged then there could be a loop. but as said above, if you can launch games without blackscreen, then your daughterboard should be good.

you can do it in recovery mode. select the "restore ps3" option.

Then, in this case, remove everything, right, the hen etc.
and after that still on 4.85?
Can I install the latest version of hen after that?
Just repeat the same unlocking process right?
And sorry for so many questions, it's just that I'm very cautious.
 
after restoring, you will still be on 4.85. then you can install latest hen if you want.
