The Future of the PlayStation 2 Internal Hard Drive
.[/hr]We have recently started 2023, and the so-called PlayStation 2 console scene is surprisingly still doing well, yes, even better than ever before and better than on not one newer platform! And one of the leading projects that anyone interested can mention without a long moment's hesitation is Open PS2 Loader - the successor to HDLoader and USB Advance, a program used to run games from USB, i.Link (FireWire), MX4SIO (a reader for e.g. SDXC in the Memory Card slot), the local network and the internal hard drive, whose operation is still stuck in the darkness of the Middle Ages. ;) Before I get into specifics, it's worth recalling what the current, extremely exotic logical disk structure that Sony designed looks like, and which is supported by every software written to date that supports the internal hard drive. Without understanding the APA, you won't understand the idea of a hybrid drive. It is only later that I will discuss the concept of building a Frankenstein with something modern, familiar, while providing a full or residual layer of compatibility.

Update (May - 2023): Now PSP models Slim 04g, 07g, 09g models, & the PSP Street 11g model are now supported >> See Details from @zecoxao in the post via >> this link <<
. Original Article (Jan 2021): For more than ten years PSP-3000 owner's have been used to the fact that their device couldn't be restored (unbricked) at home. Many fear the brick as if it's the worst nightmare that could ever happen when experimenting with your device. Even worse in 2021, now because warranty for all PSPs are over, so bricked later (psp) models go either for parts or are doomed to dust in boxes and drawers they'd never return from... that is, if this thread didn't appear with the release of Baryon Sweeper R1 :^)

PS3 PS3HEN v3.2.2 - New Additions/ Fixes & Backported Firmware's Support from Team PS3Xploit.

Update 4/25/2023: PS3HEN 3.2.2 has been released. Check the changelog for details. We have seen a lot of developer's back in the fold after the 4.90 official firmware update that hit the PlayStation 3 several weeks ago. We seen a couple weeks ago developer's @Joonie and @esc0rtd3w of the Ps3Xploit Team update Ps3HEN to v3.2.0, now we have a new update with the release of v3.2.1.. Ps3HEN is a Homebrew Enabler that is an alternative exploit to custom firmware (cfw) for models that can not install a CFW. unlike custom firmware on the ps3, Ps3HEN has the ability to run on all ps3 model's, while many feature that are in CFW can be found in PS3HEN it does not completely replicate the CFW experience so if your PS3 has the ability to run a CFW that is the better route, but Ps3HEN is a very powerful and capable exploit. See a CFW vs Ps3HEN comparison >here< for a rundown of feature's. In the update v3.2.1, there has been a number of changes and added support to Ps3HEN. @Joonie has released a backport of HFW (hybrid firmware) for 4.83, this was done as Ps3HEN has provided support for 4.83 FW, plus 4.84 DEX firmware is also now supported. There has been a number of other supported firmware and various other changes in the payload and plugin to PS3HEN, Plus this fixes the wMM bug that was creating freezing issue in v3.2.0. See latest changelogs provided below.

PS3 Exploiting 4.90 OFW (Installing CFW & Running PS3HEN) Flash Writer / PS3HEN now supporting 4.90 FW

(Update: PS3HEN 3.2.0 w/ 4.90 Support Released) Exploiting a PlayStation 3 console in firmware 4.89 was a bit of a mess to say the least and added alot of confusion that was compounded by bad advice's on various platforms and even the emergence of dangerous software. With incomplete version of the closed source PS3 Toolset by bguerville (of PS3Xploit Team) that were being distributed around the net, Causing random bricks to user's as they were not using the true Toolset as it was not the Original Code of the Toolset (just partial code and some bypasses/removal of check's, that are normally designed to make the toolset safe and brick-proof originally in the official. but the incomplete you have to hope everything goes smoothly) . So, many great developer's that are active in the PS3 scene now and whom have return to the scene and a new name have come together with psx-place to bring you the proper exploration of 4.90 on your PS3 Console. So we do not have the same confusion in the scene that we seen in 4.89 and the unofficial brick-ware floating from unreliable and untrustworthy sources and software.. We want to set the stage for the safest methods from the names of developer's you trust that been in the scene for year's and the names who have been advancing the community for a long time. Not having to rely on the untrustworthy sources and services.

The PS Vita Scene has been nothing short of incredible if you enjoy homebrew and game port's, Since it's creator's abandon its hardware of the Ps Vita and its cousin the PlayStation TV. The homebrew community took over, providing the platform a 2nd wind and it keeps getting better with new support for many games. Thanks to TheFlow release of the kubridge.skprx, that has allowed for some Android games to be ported to the PS Vita we have now seen 40 games now ported to the Ps Vita, this does not even include the vast amount of homebrew available on the vita unrelated to Android Wrapper ports, Its been a healthy community with releases happening very often. Developer @Rinnegatamante has been a developer who has provided many projects you can see a full list here on his website Vita DB and many of this release threads for some of those projects here Now the developer has been dropped 6 new ports for the ps vita, These Android/wrapper ports Include

As Sony tends to do, they like to come with a surprise firmware update when you least expect it and here they are with a surprise 4.90 firmware update, now there has been some panic of potential changes and exploits that could be patched in 4.90, well that is lhe case and not a worry (you shouldn't update yet, but no exploits have been closed), Since firmware 4.80 there has not been any changes to the kernel, developer @Joonie confirms in the forums here that 4.90 use's the 4.80 kernel source and since firmware 4.83 we have not seen any counter measure to deter homebrew capabilities on the console for CFW or PS3HEN, Which that attempt (in 4.83) was countered by @Joonie with the creation of HFW (OFW w/ 4.82 webkit injected). Since that time we have seen the towel thrown in as 4.84 / 4.85 / 4.86 / 4.87 /4.88 / 4.89 and now in 4.90. The update is the usual BluRay update and not much more, but good to see Sony still supporting the BluRay drive (as they should IMO).
PS5 [PS2 on PS5 / PS4] RetroArch PS2 (via Mast1c0re hack) - Includes 10 Libretro Retro Core's playable

Update v1.1 - Add support / instructions for 4 additional libretro core's: Handy (Atari Lynx) / Atari800 (Atari) / Mednafen_Wswam (Wonderswam) / Prboom (Doom + mods)
.As the Mast1c0re hack matures, we are seeing some PS2 homebrew appear for the Hack that is progressing on both the PlayStation 5 (PS5) (6.50 firmware) and also the PlayStation 4 (PS4) (10.01+ firmware), the Mast1c0re hack is an exploit within ps2 emulation on both the PS4 and PS5 that has remained unpatched at the time of writing . The hack is very useful on the PS5 and also PS4's that have not been Jailbroken as you can run Ps2 homebrew through the PS2 Emulator, giving you the ability to run some homebrew and in this case Retro Emulation. While these are not the true PS4 or PS5 ports for those console's its the RetroArch-PS2 version, but is still very useful for various Retro Emulation, the hack does also provide support for your PS2 backup collection as well, Since, the hack has been progressing, scene developer Markus95 has recently released instructions and files for playing various emulators (libretro cores)via the RetroArch (PS2) port on the PS5 / PS4 through the Mast1c0re hack, Now in v1.1 the developer has now added support for 10 of libretro core's (emulators). .

PSP A new presentation on Sega Dreamcast and Nintendo DS emulation on the PSP

How far can the PSP go, in terms of emulation power? We have seen alot of progress in the emulation of various PlayStation Homebrew platforms, we have seen recent progress in the PS3 dynarec (see here), we have seen progress with the PS Vita with n64 and dreamcast and even the PS2 has seen its share of improvements to emulation. Now there was a very interesting presentation from a few days ago at the Fosdem 2023 event, FOSDEM "is a free event for software developers to meet, share ideas and collaborate. Every year, thousands of developers of free and open source software from all over the world gather at the event in Brussels." This presentation shows the challenges and also alot of progress Dremcast and NIntendo DS emulation has come on the PSP. Now there is still work to be done but the progress has shown promise and much more then the original PoC's of these emulators early in the PSP Homebrew Scene. Its an interesting presentation that does show the current state of emulating these two platforms on your PSP in 2023.
