Hi guys, last couple days been trying to find info about replacing hard drive on CFW. I'm on 4.88 Evilnat and my drive been making some not to good noises - So want to replace it ASAP, now an I right in thinking if I use the same update PUP I used on a usb formatted to fat32 - I can just install new drive and run the update at boot.. Or am I well off the mark ? Any help and advice welcome. What will happen to saves and can I transfer them?

use Apollo Save Tool to backup your saves now and resign them on new hard drive later.

games, videos, music, all will be lost.

most ps3's, you change the drive and it will ask for the pup on next boot. on NAND fat models (a,b,c,e,g), the pup is not needed but saves are still lost.

Alternatively you can just dd the contents of old hard drive if it still works onto the new one.
So I could just duplicate the disk using pc and that would work too ? I got a usb to sata adapter, That be ab easy way to do it..
if not can always do the pup update, now I know that works..
Many thanks for advice guys !

You can just duplicate it completely, but there are some disadvantages to that. You have to backup the entire thing including all the non important data, even the empty space, and then you will only be able to use that image on a HDD the exact same size, if you use it on a larger drive the extra space will be wasted.

Also if your HDD is about to die, sustained copying of ALL the data could be enough to finish it off. If it dies half way you will be wishing you got the important stuff first.

Also then you will have an large encrypted backup that is kinda hassle to work with. If it was me I would use a file manager to dump the important stuff like the dev_hdd0/home/ folder and the xregistry.sys from dev_flash2, these have all the important stuff like account info game saves, activation data, licences.

After that there are just games, probably easier to dump them again from discs, or copy them individually now if you need them.

@DeViL303 Yes I agree.. I will copy the important things first..
I was wondering couldn't I use something like EaseUs partion or AOMEI to expand the partition size after I duplicate it ? (just a thought)
If not then I think Ill backup important stuff and game saves and then use the same PUP I used with 4.88 and install to new larger disk..

No. PS3 hard drives are encrypted, and unless you want to deal with encryption, offsets, strange partitioning type and god knows what else, the only easy way is to clone the entire drive. I suggest following devil's advice if your new drive is larger, however keep in mind it's not as simple as copying everything back into the correct folders, and does require a bit of one-time work to get everything like it was before.

I think if using a file dump on the same console, I mean a dump made with a file manager or FTP, it will work fine, everything should work including saves, licences, etc. Accounts will work, As long as you also have the original xregistry.sys to suit the dump too.

Just set up new drive, install FW, then dump all the stuff back on, overwriting anything if asked, then rebuild the database.

Hmm I've run into a problem - the backup drive I had my ps3 has been lost and also the ps3update.pup . Is there anyway I can find out which PUP I used etc from looking on the PS3.. Also If I did use a wrong .PUP I downloaded from here, what would happen and could I try till I get the right .Pup as I quite sure it's out of 2? I not sure how long drive got so I'm happy to try almost anything. Many thanks

You can use any similar PUP really, it wont matter too much if you use Evilnat 4.87, 4.88, 4.89, or Rebug 4.84, all the HDD content will work with all of them the same,

First let me start by saying - Happy New year peeps, AND I THOUGHT BEFORE I START A NEW THREAD, MAYBE I COULD ASK HERE AND (Sry caps), almost lost a family member in a bad accident, so that's why it never got sorted in October, WOW the time really has flown.
I think I know what I need to do, but I always like to check. Ive had the ps3 on 4.88 evilnat and it just been left for several months due to me using another PS3 and then the accident. Anyway I need to 1} replace the drive ( it playing up) and 2} update to latest 4.89 Cobra 3 so my nephew can have it and be online.
To replace the HD (Im not worried to save any data, as he be using a new account) - am I right in thinking I can place new drive into PS3 as it formats on update, 2 use a usb drive with latest 4.89 cobra3 on it - in folder PS3/UPDATE and rename it PS3UPDAT.PUP ??? (oh yeah do a Checksum check) Then boot into safe mode and run it.. Have I got this right? oh yes (enable QA flags) hmmm where do I do this as I see it was a program to download a year or 2 back, this is the thing I think I need most conformation about ..
Also I was wondering, as don't follow all what going on with ps3 like I used to. Will there be anything I need to know that's changed etc ??
I did ask about this a few months ago, but as i say I do like to double check facts, instead of coming back with problems and being told - oh you should have done this or that first. ;)
Many thanks if you've read this and even bigger thanks if you replay .. Cheers

Sorry to hear that, I hope your family member is OK.
Once you have everything backed up just put the new HDD / SSD in the console (mind that the PS3 does not support drives larger than 1TB) and boot it up. It'll ask you to format it so let it do that (obviously it'll erase any data you had on the HDD so if it's not brand new make sure you backup everything on it). If you have a NAND system then nothing else is needed, it'll take you right to XMB, at which point you just need to restore your saves.
If you have a NOR system it'll ask you to insert a USB disk with a firmware update with a version equal or higher than the firmware you had before you replaced your HDD. If you had a CFW (or OFW 3.55 or below) it'll accept CFW, so just take Evilnat's latest firmware, rename it to "PS3UPDAT.PUP" if needed (make sure the name is all caps) and place it in the "PS3/UPDATE" directory in the USB disk (again, the name must be all caps). Also make sure the USB disk is FAT32 formatted or the PS3 won't be able to read it.
Assuming you're using a CFW with a version equal or higher to the one you had before (i.e., Evilnat 4.88 or Evilnat 4.89 in your case) then you don't need to QA flag it, and there's generally no reason not to be on the latest CFW version. Heck, Evilnat's soon to be released 4.89.3 CFW even has DEX and OtherOS support, eliminating the only two reasons to be on an older firmware.
The only thing that's extremely important is that you double and triple check and verify that the USB disk has Evilnat's CFW because if you end up flashing OFW 4.89 you'll be stuck with it until bgtoolset returns or HEN flasher is released.

best method to replace hard disk on cfw 4.88 evilnat is downgrade to 4.84 rebug rex.
at last on debug setting backup your data to new hard disk drive.
don't mistake dude.
bgtoolset not working to install cfw.

Nice one for the reply guys ! - I only just got the new drive, which is a Seagate 2TB,and a couple of other things I was waiting on, but after seeing the - "(mind that the PS3 does not support drives larger than 1TB)" I think I'll pick up a new 1TB this weekend. So little confused about that, as I'm sure I read they can use that 2TB drive. Ah I just checked and it a bit of a thing, but it actually works as a 1.5GB drive, hmm I think I Think I stay 1TB and use 2TB that will be going in the PS2 with the network mod adapter that's arrived then or even an XBox 360 Jasper I just done. I do apologise for saying such a bad word in a PS Site ;) . And I got a spare eternal 2TB drive that I seen can be used to play games from for PS3.. Has either of you tried running games from an external.. Any ideas help always welcome.. And once again thanks NiQ and omid007 and I see bgtoolset still down ;( Hopefully not to much longer for that great tool to be up and running again..
