A new system software update for #PSVita (now 3.74) and #PS3 (now 4.89) was just released.
Changes for both systems:
- Removed account creation from the PS3/Vita
- Removed some account management settings
- Device password required for sign-on

Well this sucks but alas it was bound to happen. Both can still go online with a few tweaks but not really worth it if you ask me.

  • 4.89 Firmware Official Changelog:
    • Signing in to PlayStation Network now requires a device setup password for enhanced account protection.
    • Account creation for PlayStation network and some account management features are no longer available on the console. Use your PC or Mobile browser to use account management features with improved performance, speed, and safety.

    Important Notes:
    • ❎Bgtoolset by @bguerville is not yet compatible with FW 4.89, so there is no patch for those who update it and want to go back to CFW on compatible models..

    Backup managers often need an update after a new FW version is released, at least to identify the current firmware version correctly.

    • Custom Firmware:

      Special FIrmware:
      • 4.89 DualBoot (littlebalup)
        • This Dualboot firmware for CFW user's allows for you to use an official firmware and return back to a CFW when you decide. The idea is for a safe way to use your CFW Ps3 when playing disc / psn based games online as you do not have any CFW syscalls or patches running as the dualbook firmware operates as a standard retails firmware. Then once you want to return to a CFW unlike an official firmware and that is about the only difference between a DUALBOOT (DB) firmware and an unmodified official firmware.

      Other Useful Tools:

      Awaiting Update for 4.89 Support
      • BGtoolset - Exploit / Toolset for allowing the installation of CFW from OFW 4.89. Currently supporting 4.88, 4.89 support incoming soon.

It looks like they are preparing for finally end PSN support on these consoles.

Since PS3 FW 3.21 they are mainly removing features (PS2 disc support on non phat consoles, OtherOS, BD-J, Home, facebook, Folding@Home, messages with other platforms, etc.). Even they announced that they will remove PS Store on both systems, but they regretted. I guess now they regretted to have regretted.
 
Seems that Sony is really want to force newcomers to create new account and enjoy on PS4/PS5 console instead.

Sony did created such monstrosity that deemed to be suffer in future like today and now I heard that Sony is planning to bring PS6 but it still a same typical PC CPU again.

So will we have CFW & PS3HEN for 4.89 or every dev is tired of this and so has retired, (saying as for 4.88 we only had 1 CFW)
 
Before people ask when to expect an update a thousand times...

HFW Update -- maybe soon but useless without a new HEN update.

HEN Update -- needs HFW first. there is a new act.dat creation feature that needs testing in addition to the usual tests.

CFW Update -- a new CFW can sometimes take weeks to create and properly test.

bgtoolset -- needs a 4.89 CFW before release. this is a powerful tool that needs
careful testing. it may take longer if the developer decides to add new features in addition to 4.89 support.

Homebrew Apps -- updates are not usually required (except to show correct firmware version).

(everything below will be updated by me. i have a job that limits my time so i will be slower than usual to update. HEN and HFW must be updated first.)

BT/USB Game Audio HEN Mod
No Auto-Update HEN Mod (EDIT: HEN 3.1.0 will have ability to disable auto-update and this mod is no longer needed. :))

Online account creation or local account creation? Local would totally sucks.

What means device password? 2FA?
 
AFAIK PSN account creation and management, local would be crazy, how would that even work? And it would require lots of changes which I doubt they would consider doing.

I don't know how they implemented their changes but if someone works out the new requirements for account creation and management, it might or not be possible to bring the feature back.
I don't really see what is to be gained from removing account management features, unless there was a technical obstacle in their way..
Could it be that they strengthened TLS for PSN account management and could not be bothered bringing ps3/vita TLS support up to compatible status?
Or something along those lines..

In my opinion, Sony only wants to limit the creation of new users on those 15 years old systems (that they want to kill forcefully).
They are trying to force their customers to move to newer systems -that produce them more revenues- in a "subtle" way...
 
Except for technical reasons, why would they want to phase out PSN on PS3? It costs them nothing to maintain and must still make some money so there's no downside here.
To sell other consoles?
They don't even have PS5 to sell to all those ready to buy one as it is and it doesn't look like that's going to change any time soon.

I am not saying they are not planning to phase it out, I am merely pointing out that imho there's no obvious reason for them to do so, except maybe if they wish to strengthen PSN security altogether, not just account creation and management but also all PSN connections for gaming and just don't want to make the necessary changes which may also cascade onto 3rd party gaming services changes too.. something like that.
 
my guest is they need to migrate last user database and unify to new services of playstation plus, premium or wharever they are implementing, also the news about ps3 ps2 and psx titiles in ps5 some couple weeks ago giving a message to clients and "potential clients" ps5 will be a standard plattform for all "old" or retro games, something similar nintendo is doing with virtual console (resell and resell again old titles) nostalgia is becoming new hook for "old timers" also good effect for big catalog supply for youngsters or new clients.
