4.93 EVILNAT (Cobra 8.5)

PS3 4.93 Evilnat w/ Cobra v8.5 - (CEX/PEX/D-PEX) 4.93

Thanks mate I forgot to mention it

BETA 4: https://mega.nz/folder/8YF2RCiB#YVDxV2LYLURPa3RxlCAvrQ

Thank you very much for all the details my friend!

I have tried the same steps that you mentioned and it did let me install DB 4.91 from the internal HDD with System Update Debug enabled

This is my current configuration:
  • Model: CHECL04
  • HDD: 80GB (Original)
  • CEX/DEX: Network > * Custom Firmware Tools > CEX2DEX > Show Information:
    • Firmware: 4.91 CEX
    • IDPS: Original
    • TargetID: CEX
    • VSH: DEX
    • XMB Host: CEX
    • Debug Settings: CEX
  • QA: Network > Custom Firmware Tools > QA Tools > Check QA Flags
    • QA Flags are Enabled
  • System Update Settings: Settings > Debug Settings > System Update Debug: On
Have you used any PUP downgrader 9.99? Have you tried being in CEX and disabling and re-enabling the QA flags?

I think the Dual Boot problem I am seeing is probably specific to me, I will keep digging on my end.

The crashing during update problem still happens on Beta 5. Second attempt is successful still. Other than the upgrade user experience stressing me out, I am not seeing any other issues.

I already reported the issue to Evilnat. It seems to be caused by setting 'Improper Shutdown Warning' to Off in Debug Settings.

Yeap, he need to find a way to force it, the same way as when the file system really need to be rebuilt, the current way just reboot without deleting the turnoff file in dev_hdd0/tmp, so it triggers that screen.

If you disable the screen via debug settings, the xai plugin does nothing.

I'm going back and forth from EvilNat to DBHFW without any problems.

Yeah a few people have mentioned the same. I'm not sure why I'm seeing issues but it seems like it won't install the same version on top of itself e.g. CFW 4.91 to DB 4.91. If I go from CFW 4.90 to DB 4.91 it works. If I go from CFW 4.90 to DB 4.90 it fails again.

to make it work on "NAND" system, it needs an additional modification.. UPL needs to be editied properly like version 99.99 or 9.99 IIRC.

FYI @littlebalup

Yes, you can.
Okay and if i update to 4.91.2 [BETA 4] and then i try to update it to 4.91.2 CEX (that is going to be out soon) will my PS3 update smoothly even if it's the same version (4.91) or should i do some specific steps in the process

so does that means that i can't update from 4.91.2 [BETA 4] to 4.91.2 CEX (that is going to be out soon) or should i do some specific steps in the process?

btw what's QA Flags?

You can switch between PEX and CEX without any issues (assuming you don't use PEX to switch your console to DEX mode).

The QA flag puts your console into QA mode, which is used by game studios for testing. It enables a debug menu, but more importantly, it allows downgrading the firmware (normally you can only install firmware equal or greater than your current version).

I see thank you so much

No tool that I am aware of on CEX versions, however, I could be mistaken as I am still quite new to the space.
As for the current drive I am using, its a Toshiba 1 TB, albeit this is internal. If I come across any good recommendations for external options, I will be certain to share in the like.

In short, there is no good external option for the PS3 because the USB ports are only 2.0. Hell, even as far as internal drives go SSDs are overkill and will be hugely nerfed to about 150MB/s read/write not the 500MB/s or so modern SATA drives are capable of simply because the controller in the PS3 can't handle and was never designed for those speeds. A good SATA 3 HDD in the PS3 will do just as well vs an SSD because of the PS3s limitations in this area. What makes this more confusing for most people is all the "HDD vs SSD" comparisons you see is that it's always the stock HDD that is tested, and ALL of those are crap. They are SATA 1 drives capable of only between 45-70MB/s read/write (depending on HDD model) an average 5400RPM SATA 3 HDD will boost that figure to easily around 120MB/s or so, and a good SATA 3 7200RPM HDD comfortably 150MB/s or so, the hardware limit of the PS3s controller. There are a few other factors related to storage to consider but in almost all cases (if not all) you won't see those advantages an SSD has either because textures from the PS3 generation aren't of a high enough resolution. Hope this clears some things up for people :D

Before you prepare a console for making it run CFW, it is recommended to take a backup of your flash memory which results in a file called "dump.bin".
You collect this on to a memory stick for safe storage.

When you want to put this back on to the console again (presumably to replace the CFW equivalent "nofsm_patch_491.bin" which had to be applied to make it CFW), can you just use PS3Toolset.com again to do this?
Is that how it works?
Or is this flash memory file updated to stock again when you reapply OFW to the console?

@Evilnat , the new BETA 5 CEX release seems to have resolved the 0x8002F155 I reported previously. Maybe the error comes into play when installing the debugging portion of the PEX firmware? Not sure, but not seeing the issue when going from CEX (converted from PEX by disabling the XMB Debugging options) to CEX.

Can you try to reinstall it again and check if it keeps giving that error code? I reuploaded PEX and D-PEX with some changes

EDIT: Reinstall the CFW twice to confirm

What is DBHFW? You mean, HFW installed in Dual Boot?

I tried an SShd once. It was a firecuda. And well the PS3 corrupted it so bad it got locked in .raw format and I couldn't Even recover it on my laptop. Ended up throwing the HDD away, and I tried multiple fixes to try to get it to read again. This is one of the many problems that can occur with using a SSD on a ps3

So, SSHDs aren't recommended as well unlike what I've been told, only HDDs/eMMCs? How could it mess up the HDD too? Can SSDs and SSHDs mess up the PS3 so badly that it can mess up HDDs? That doesn't make much sense. You're report is very confusing.

I already reported the issue to Evilnat. It seems to be caused by setting 'Improper Shutdown Warning' to Off in Debug Settings.

I can't find that setting, I have "Crash Report" set to "On" and "Crash Reporter Status" set to "Ready" and I still have this problem in [PEX] [BETA 5].

What is DBHFW? You mean, HFW installed in Dual Boot?: Read here, it is Dual Boot + Hybrid Firmware - for users that can run CFW, it can be used to revert to a mostly standard OFW that is suspected that Sony cannot detect different from their OFW. It is Hybrid because it has the Hybrid hacked Web-Browser so you can install HEN, but also you can directly install CFW from the OS again without having to use any toolkits. It's useful for moving back and forth between CFW, HEN and a mostly "OFW".

So, SSHDs aren't recommended as well unlike what I've been told, only HDDs/eMMCs?: Read here, here and here from Evilnat. Suggest following up on any of these threads with your questions.

I was talking about this and read what @CFW-Us3r said.

Does anybody know if Evilnat can read burned CD, DVD and Blu-ray games, and if so, do the CD and DVD games in CD format need to be burned to CD-R, do the DVD games in DVD format need to be burned to DVD-R and do the Blu-ray games need to be burned to BD-R? What are the recommended brands and burn speed? I know it's not advisable to burn games but I'm just curious.

Did you say it's still an issue on Beta 5 release?

@aldostools actually just posted this on Twitter the other day: https://x.com/aldostools/status/1779857239542579399

Aldo, do you happen to know any of the answers to the other more specific sub-questions?
