A question about Elder Scrolls

Loathsome Dung Eater
So yesterday while grabbing a few Pops and a few graphic novels at the bookstore here in town with a gift card I was given I happened to look over at their PS3 games. While they didn't have much I didn't own they did have Skyrim. So on a whim I decided to just pick it up for fun.

Now this being said I have never played any of the games in this series. I do own Morrowind for the OG Xbox but never played it as it's still sealed. So my question is do I need to play any of the other games to enjoy this game? It seems this is the Legendary Edition and looking at the back cover art seems to have all or most of the big DLC.

I got this for only $3 and don't have any new games I haven't beat for the PS3 in a while. I have heard a lot of people enjoy this series and while not my normal type of game figured so many can't be that wrong. So to anyone that has played this can it be enjoyed by people that haven't ever played any of the previous games? Or is there any of the past titles I should play prior to this?

You can play any what ever way
I own all of them and even bought the PS4 skyrim special edition
FYI they are long games especially if you are a completest.
Action RPG FYI

no,you can actually play first whatever you want.if you're picky about the graphics maybe you should start first with earler one but graphics isn't what any TES makes great anyway (but they can look beautiful,even older titles have scenes unmatched to this day).

that being said if you like your rpg's a bit dumbed down maybe you should start with skyrim on the controller.oblivion and morrowind even more should be played on the pc with mouse and keyboard,and morrowind is almost straight true pc rpg.

earlier games aren't great way to start TES journey,don't worry about them yet.

The lore is interlinked, but they stand alone as individual games in their own right. So, if you played Morrowind you'd be more familiar with the Dragonborn DLC for Skyrim. There are references to the in-game universe, such as the recurring character of M'aiq the Liar - however nothing important so much as nods to earlier games in the series.

In other words, yes you could play Skyrim as the first in TES series. I personally played IV: Oblivion first, then V: Skyrim and only later did I get around to III: Morrowind (which is by far the best in the series, in my opinion). There'll be references you won't necessarily pick up on, and you won't be as familiar with the TES universe lore, but by no means will it stop you enjoying the game and its accompanying DLCs.

Nah you don't need to play any of the previous games to understand this as it has it own storyline. It has ferquent references to Oblivion but nothing to do with the main story as the events of Oblivion happened a couple of hundred years previous in the Saga's timeline. Best thing about these games is you can do your own thing, I have a tendancey to just explore and "Dungeon Dive" into random places to see what I can find, kill enemies and level up.

Skyrim is not as big as the other games in terms of Quests, side quests. Charactor levelling isn't as complitcated as Oblivion but has Lengendary Skills which means if a skill gets to Lvl 100 then you can reset it to 15 (Make it legendary) then level up again allowing to to almost infinatly level up your Charactor> one of mine is level 203 (Original Skryim Levelling capped out at Lvl 80 with all skills a 100) with over 4000 hours of gameplay used. I have about 12 or more different Charactors at various levels.

The DLC is canny good as well. Dragonborn adds a new land to explore and many new quests to the game> Solthstiem which is part of Morrowind adds some more weapons armour etc. Dawngaurd is my favourtie DLC again adding the same as the above but diffent land and weapons. And the Hearthfire DLC allows you to purachase land an build your own massive house (There are 3 plots of land your can by) as well as a few other things.

This game is defo worth it, you can explore for the game for years, literally lol, do it again and still find some thing new with Skyrim, Oblivion is even bigger still. I have all the Elder scrolls games on nearly all platforms, atm am playing Olibvion on PC for about the 100th time lol but Skyrim is my favourite game in the series for far and would recomend to anyone to play it.

Working on that now. I ripped the ISO to my internal HDD but noticed there was different languages of the DLC. So I'm FTP'ing to to my PC so I can take those out as I am kinda low on space on my PS3 so I'm gonna shrink it as much as I can then give it a go.

be warned that skyrim can perform poorly on the ps3 especially if the iso is on the internal hdd also,that's one of the games that actually benefits from sshd and ssd,basically anything you can...

Well I just got it ripped removing useless assets keeping only English. I can copy it to a flash drive if needed. I have noticed the system really seems to struggle with it. I have just gotten to the first cage to attempt lock picking. Broke three already I have to be doing something wrong.

Most likely a low Lockpicking skill combined with a minigame which was carried over from Fallout 3, that I can't stand lol

I'm gonna give it an honest chance but TBH I haven't ever really enjoyed first person style games. I recall my friend playing Oblivion in a third person view. Is this possible with Skyrim?

You can play in third-person, I think by pressing R3. It's been forever since I played Skyrim lol

First-person mode looks better to me, but the third-person in Skyrim is a lot better than Oblivion's.

This only tends to happen when you are quite a away through the game.

One thing I would say to do on the PS3 version is to go into the Options and turn off "Save on Wait", "Save on Fast Travel", "Save on Charactor Menu" and "Save on Sleep" as these can cause the loading times to to increase, basically you have to save manually all the time but if done frequently is fine as it saves you in the exact spot you save it. You can save it at anytime even in the middle of combat. But as a new game it will perform just fine.

I have just gotten to the first cage to attempt lock picking. Broke three already I have to be doing something wrong.

Come on man, that one is an easy lock to pick even for a "noob" at the game. What I do is to use the analog to gently rotatate it, do it fast as hell and it will break the pick, do it slowly and carefully testing for how much the barrel turns as soon as the pick stops or being to wobble release the analog to try and save the pick. Each level of lock has a different amount of space that has to be hit to open it.

Novice = ------------------------------
Apprentise = -----------------
Expert = --------
Master = --

Just a ruff estermate of the turning circle of the lock for the sweet spots.

Oh and one other thing.... at such a low level stay away from the Giants roaming near Whiterun unless you want to be lauched into space lol. They leave you alone unless you get too close. I decided to charge at one on my first ever playthorogh after doing helgan and and got smashed in to ground that hard it sent me bouncing a couple of thousand feet above the map> Medievil style space travel.

I'm gonna give it an honest chance but TBH I haven't ever really enjoyed first person style games. I recall my friend playing Oblivion in a third person view. Is this possible with Skyrim?

Yes its either L3 or R3 and hold in the button in and using the other analog you can adjust how far away or close you to your charactor in 3rd person.

Yeah I got the lock picked and got the stuff from the mage. Picked the rest of the cages and the cells for fun. Got a few levels up on my lockpick skills.

skyrim is designed with 3rd person and controller in mind,and somewhat more naive/casual/younger audience,it's the best TES for that kind of play style...

on the ps3 it needs all the help you can get so i'd strongly suggest to launch iso form external drive.you can also do a file system rebuild from recovery,that essentially defrags the internal drive,all games that are heavy on streaming resources (and skyrim is the prime example of that) benefit from doing that regardless of the plarform.

Wrong ... like the its designed for 1st Person, 3rd person was improved dramaically for this game but 3rd person is crap for archary. And also this is a mouse and keybaord game mainly. All versions of the game have the mappings for mouse and keyboard even the PS3 version.

The internal SATA II HDD interface is faster than USB 2.0 so this makes no sense. Everywhere you look there is info telling you that playing games on USB on PS3 can slow them down, I have tried Skyrim on USB is ISO and imediatly switched back to JB on the PS3's HDD the lag and loading times was stupid.

This is only because of the crap engine Bethesda use's on nearly all its games> Morrowind, Oblivion,Skyrim, TESO, Fallout etc. Its full of bugs. If they were say to make the game using Unreal there would be no issues. They have not learned from the crap engine and even the new Elder Scrolls thats going to be a launch game for the PS5 uses it.

The UI is more designed for consoles in mind, like it was for Oblivion (but more so) so on PC I use the SkyUI mod which may be available on the PS3 as well?

skyrim is a great game, i wish i could have that feeling when i first played it again there was nothing like it, just a warning of sorts the game is a bit glitchy i guess because its so big and all, i mean is that it has a few game breaking bugs and glitches that can break the game but do not let it take away from the fun of the game. (such as if you do this before that something afterwards may or may not spawn, if you enter a certain dungeon before a quest in which you can get some armor it might not be there by the second time you go)

also do play in english (for anyone whose native language isnt english), in english the armor is organized by sets so iron goes helmet-chest-hands-boots, BUT in spanish is terrible for some reason it does all the helmets of all armor types you have on your inventory then all the chest types and so on (its annoying to switch back a forth), also the bards dont appear to be singing in spanish more like reading there is like no rythm to it.

also you know what my 1st experience with the game was? after you finish the 1st quest and you're left to roam free the worls as you please the 1st wolf that spawned and became hostile froze the ps3, i find it quite funny that the 1st enemy that i found in the open world froze the ps3.

Nope, you cannot use Skryim UI mod on consoles.

The UI is the same on all platforms, its just depends on what platform your on to what UI parts are loaded. The console UI is a stripped down version of the PC UI. If you extract the BSA files all the scripts, UI's and mapping are there for PC, 360 and PS3 it all in there.

There is no difference in any of the versions other that the executable file for the game which determins what is loaded on each platform.

For example in the SKYRIM.INI file I have added loads of things from the PC version to the PS3 version to customise various things and increase performace, I fixed 3rd person view so its not off centre and is above the head if zoomed in close and archary phyisics so its more realistic and various other things which have greatly improved the game on PS3.

Things in chests, other than quest items, are randomly spawned depending on level and ability. If you clear a chest it will be 30 in game days before anything will respawn in it. Same with enemies in dungeons. Some quest itmes can only be obtained by exploring, ie deadric artifacts that trigger thoose quests> Merida Beacon is spawned in a random place/chest for "Breaking Dawn" quest to get the Dawnbreaker sword, it could be anywhere.

skyrim streams from both internal hdd installation and disc/backup so this way you offload some of the bandwith (that's bottleneck in this game on the ps3) from internal sata.also,this is how the game id designed to work (play it from the disc itself and note huge workload on the BD player).

same can be aplied to all of the later and more intensive ps3 games,it's clearly a method of devs to make the most out of the ps3.
