PS2 Can not get VMC to work

I wasn't sure exactly where I should post about this, but here goes (apologies if this isn't the right place).

I cannot get VMC to work.

I still have FHDB at 1.953 but FMCB at 1.966 (both Noobie packs from here).

I have attempted to use VMC via both and neither are working.

The file is created and everything (and settings saved), but the game complains that there is no MC in and when there is, saves to the actual MC. I have checked the VMC files and they're empty.

The games are VMC compatible.

When I initially modded my PS2, I did expand the +OPL partition (as, at the time, was recommended) to 4096MB. I had intended, if I wanted, to be able to create a VMC for each game, hence the generosity.

I have read (recently) that this MAY cause issues, and with VMC in particular.

So... what do I need to do to try and get this working? Preferably without having to start from scratch... (evidently HDL Dump Helper GUI 2.3 no longer works).

Can the +OPL partition be deleted and created again, without affecting the installed games? How?

Also, any information on updating an existing FHDB install as well as creating/packing a custom FMCB would be the bee's knees.

i moved this to its own thread.

Sorry to "double post", however I cannot edit the other.

I keep seeing mention of "enabling" VMC. Is there a special (global?) setting for that somewhere that I'm not seeing?

I am also seeing mention of perhaps having to do something to the .CFG files? (Or, when you set a VMC in game menu, is that supposed to automatically enable the game/CFG to use VMC?).

In case this matters, the .CFG files are automatically made/kept in CFG-DEV and there's nothing in CFG folder (though I did attempt to copy one over; VMC still did not work). Well, there were CFG's in CFG folder, but I deleted them all and VMC's as well to see if that helped. It didn't.

HDD write permissions are good to go and all, by the way; should have mentioned that earlier.

Worst case scenario, I will buy another drive (I am thinking a 2TB; please do chime in if I should stick to 1TB instead) and try again from scratch. Really would prefer not to have to do that, though... (it took me a bloody week to load this one up, doing nothing else).

If I do that, I'd like to know if there is a limitation on how large the +OPL partition can be. If I can never, ever, "expand" it after due to these sorts of problems, then I think I'd rather plan to go overkill than underkill... So, would, say, 8GB be too large?

Worst of the worst, I'll have to figure out a means to go SMB instead... (I didn't go that route because of WannaCry/Ransomware risk. I do not have a Raspberry Pi or other means at my disposal, currently, that would be safe to use for SMB 2; as in not at all on the internet proper).

there should be settings for each game in opl. i think you have to press triangle to get to them but im not sure.
