PS3 Cannot update or reset to OFW - Second Hand PS3 running REBUG 4.81

Hello friends,

I recently bought a second hand PS3 running REBUG 4.81 (Was not aware at the time it was running CFW). I did not even know what Custom FirmWare was at the time, as I bought it so I could play games together with my brother. I attempted to sign-in to PSN with it and of course I ran into some errors.
This begun the spiraling rabbit hole of me finding out what CFW, OFW and HFW is. I figured the console just needed updating for me to attempt to connect online, so I just tried a guide to install the latest version of CFW I could find on PSX-Place, where the guide linked to. Keeping things short, I keep getting an error code and a "Data Is Corrupted" message whenever I try to update through the USB Drive. Tried multiple USBs, formatting them over and over, making sure that the update file is the only thing I left on it. Nothing. I even tried a different guide for resetting the console to OFW and then I figured I could just try to follow a guide based on the version I try to install and return to CFW or HFW if I really wished to... Even that does not work, the PS3 refuses to recognize the existence of an update file on my USB. As I have run out of ideas at this point and I am basically a total newbie on this homebrew thing, I am wondering if there is anything I can do at this point to make the console useable or some other guide I should follow.
I don't know what will be useful to provide, but I assume these will be:

System Information says it is running on 4.81
Booting in Recovery Mode says I need to use an update file 2.70 or higher. This number also pops up when first booting up the console.

Thanks in advance! First post btw.

sounds like you are using d-rex rebug. you must switch to rex then upgrade.

look up "cex2dex" (use rebug toolbox). when it is done then install either evilnat 4.89 (if you want cfw) or ofw 4.89 (if you want stock ps3).

Thank you for the reply. Could you clarify if you mean to use the PS3 and search for cex2dex? I'll work on that tonight when I am at home.

Hello Again,
I finally got around to trying this out. I followed the video instructions, but the REBUG site is down as far as I have seen. I used the links from https://www.psx-place.com/threads/h...ng-www-rebug-me-and-rebug-cfw-lite-rex.32141/ to try and access the download links, but when I opened the zipped files all I found was a text file in them, no PUP file. So I downloaded the files for REX and D-REX from https://archive.midnightchannel.net/SonyPS/Firmware/index.php?oldmenu=1&cat=rebug instead and went ahead to try and update using the REX file. Still gives me the error code and "The data is Corrupted." message. The error it gives me is (80029CA).

I think I should note that on the bottom right, I can see the text:
"Connected From:0.0.0.0
HostName:
IP Address:192.xxx.x.xx"
I didn't write the whole IP Address.

At this point I tried the D-REX file. That one worked! After the update it had the REBUG Toolbox pre-installed in the game menu. I checked in the Toolbox and it listed the system as LV2 Kernel CEX with DEX as target. The Toolbox Menu I have is different from what the video you linked me towards shows. Versions are different too, 02.02.09 is listed on mine while the video shows 02.03.01 . I cannot activate QA Flag (says Unavailable) and I couldn't find a dump root key option. I tried tinkering around and couldn't change the system listings to both be DEX.

Is there anything I should / could do at this point?
Many thanks for your help!

you can get newest rebug toolbox from brewology (direct link HERE).

change both to CEX and then try to install thr REX pup. if it works, then try enabling qa flag. after that install whatever pup you originally wanted.
