CECHG01 Freezing when playing games

So I picked up a PS3 from a thrift store near me for $15, sold as is, but it had a sticker on it saying it works. So I rolled the dice and picked it up. It launched right up, the Ethernet is having issues getting an IP addr, but wifi is fine. It was on 4.79 so I went to 4.85 > Hybird 4.85 + ps3Xploit > Ferrox 4.85 loaded up MultiMan and WebMan and everything seemed to be working, but it freezes in games. I started playing AC on disc and off the hdd and it froze. 24 the game (PS2 iso that I made) goes through a cut scene and then freezes. Burnout Remaster off the hdd - PS3 downloaded th update launches and within a minute or two freezes, music stops playing and all.

So I think it could be one of two things.
1.) Overheating - to fix this I was going to crack it open, get rid of some dust with compressed air and re-paste the CPU and GPU.
2.) Corrupt Filesystem - My idea here is to put in a fresh SSD i have and rebuild the FileSystem, Start Fresh Essentially. I don't know if this would solve anything and need advice on what I may need to do get the machine re-jailbroken.

I would appreciate any input from the community on what may cause the system to lock up like that, So far I have tried 2 PS3 Games on the Hard Drive and from a live disc and one PS2 ISO launched from WebMan folder on the Dash. Are there any apps for 4.85 that can read the CPU/GPU temp and also put a load on them? Is there any common issue PS3's of that generation have. Note: AC (Assasins Creed) also froze before I loaded the Hybrid Firmware, let alone Ferrox CFW. Thanks

Well, it wouldn't hurt to open it up and clean everything.
Did you check your temps before freezing up issue?

If the console overheats, it will show a message saying it's overheat, or just flash yellow light and power off. It won't lock up.
I think you could start with wiping the hard drive, connect to your PC and scan for bad sectors. Reinstall CFW and try again.
Another possible cause is bad NEC capacitors. These capacitors on Phat consoles have high failure rate and when they fail, they can't supply steady voltage to CPU/GPU under heavy load and cause system to lock up.

I agree @xxxmarioxxx .
Was just giving somewhere to start.
Glad it's working for you @88pockets, but if you start getting same issue, you may have to go further with what Mario was saying.
I had to replace 3 nec on mine.

This is not common lol. But in case is giving you problems of some sort, changing the capacitors like people said, and putting a nice SSD would be nice.
If I put in a new drive would I then load OFW > Hybrid > PS3Xploit > CFW or since the NAND already has been exploited could I just load up the CFW. Also which Caps are the are usually the culprit.
A note about the repaste, games are def working now, but the system is not dramatically cooler like i had imagined it would be, with the temps within 5 to 10 degrees of where they were after a repaste with the CPU topping out a 68 C accoring to WebMan. I also set the fan to a static 55%, noise doesn't bother me, by gaming desktop has a lot of fans going and I had a bunch of servers in the living room for months running 24/7. Also is setting up PS3netserv with webman a different process then before. I am also curious if there is anything known about ethernet failures. It won't get an IP and its def not my network or the ethernet cord

When you put in a new hdd/sdd, it should just format and, it's been a while if I remember right, it should just go through setup to get to xmb. If anything more, should just have to reinstall cfw.
Shouldn't have to exploit again, again it's been a while

Since that fat has a NAND memory, the FW stores there, so you don't need to worry about the installation. The temperature problem is always a thing on fats, there're a lot of mods you can apply, like adding fans over the top cover where's the PSU is. Make a big hole in the lower part where the cooler is, so you can add an air intake. Or simply delidding the proccessors, which could be dangerous. There're tutorials of that as well.
About the capacitors, read this: https://www.psx-place.com/threads/tutorial-nec-tokin-capacitors-replacement-ylod-fix.25260/

And try to clean the ethernet port with a brush and alcohol. Dry it out and try again. If that doesn't work, you might have a hardware issue.

I threw in the SSD and it works, now the only funky thing is getting my copy of GTAV to copy to the HDD. But whatever. Thanks for all your help guys.

I threw in a new hdd, but get freeze when loading a disc, so maybe a nec issue??

what do u mean by loading a disc? does it have issues loading disc games on the xmb menu or does the game actually start then skip and freeze?

No, game never starts, disc icon doesn't show up in xmb. But as it's trying to be read, the screen freezes.
I don't believe blue ray is working properly, but main concern is freezing.
No problem as long as I don't try to load a game.
Also, my system has not been exploited. CECHA01

The bluray laser is probably dead. All CECHA systems I own have defective laser, they can't read bluray discs but can play PS2 and PS1 discs. You can find replacement laser assembly (KES400A) on aliexpress or ebay for several dollars.

Even if the laser is dead, the system won't lock up. Probably there's something wrong with the hard drive or motherboard.

I was afraid of that on blue ray, it won't load ps2 game discs either.
I replaced the hdd, but still has same results, I will do the nec repair and see if that changes anything.
Thanks for the info.

What happens when u try load apps? any issues?

I'll be away for a week, when I get back I'll check.
Don't have any apps on it, but I could try browser. Go through the settings and no issues there, just when putting a load on the system seems like.

try use the ps store thats the easiest to test, my hunch is leaning towards bad logic board so trying to rule that out.
