Converting PS3_GAME disk to PKG to play from XMB

lic.dat is needed when converting from PKG to disc game.

To convert PS3 disc game to PKG, the easiest way to do it is if the game has an update PKG:
1- Backup the disc game to a folder.
2- Download all the update packages of the game (if the game has several updates, download all)
3- Extract all the packages from lowest to highest version overwriting the files of the older version.
4- Move USRDIR, TROPDIR of the extracted packages and overwrite these folders in the backup folder.
5- Then move USRDIR, TROPDIR from the backup folder back to the PKG folder.
6- Replace PARAM.SFO in the PKG folder with the one from the backup. Change the category to HG and set the version to the same of the latest build.
7- Make a PKG for use on CFW or inject the files to hdd0/game/titleid of OFW and rebuild the database or use transfer data.

If the game doesn't have update, it is still possible to convert to PSN format (resigning EBOOT, SELF, SPRX and SDAT to EDAT) but the converted game will work only on CFW.
Can we maybe elaborate on this a little bit more, maybe with an example? Ex: Soul Calibur 4
1. Rip DISC folders to directory
2. Download game update using PS3tools
3. Unpkg the update
4. Copy USRDIR from extracted update package and overwrite USRDIR in disc game directory
5. this is where I have confusion -> we take the entire disc directory and copy it over back to the extracted update directory?
6. Keep param.sfo from disc dump, but change appver to match that of the update and change from DG ot HG
7. Build PKG and hope it works?????

Do we have to generate LIC.DAT? I have tried this and it boots, but then returns to XMB so clearly there was a problem someplace.

we take the entire disc directory and copy it over back to the extracted update directory

No. Copy extracted packages content to extracted disc content overwriting all in the process (because You want overwrite unpatched data by data from patches and You want EBOOT not for disc but for disk).

Anyway, I don't see any reason why doing that when we have CFW and HEN. Use disc images ("converted games" will still must be "installed" in the same way as real disc games or unpacked disc games or mounted disc images). Why then wasting time where only benefit will be different game icon location?

one reason that might justify the CFW2OFW conversion for HEN users, is that once the disc game is converted and installed on your HDD, you don't need to activate HEN at all to run the game.

(I know, activating HEN takes a few seconds and have a 99% success rate, but still, someone could say that this conversion allows them to play right away without even enabling hen)

A good site note for this conversion thing is...
for me, Aliens vs. Predator bluray backup does not work,if i convert it with CFW2OFW ..
it works if i do it manually...
and talking about doing it manually....
(i will use Aliens vs. Predator EURO version as an example here...)
do *NOT* change the title-id "BLES00585" to "NPEB00585" while you are editing the param.nfo file, just leave it as it is..
(the game will not boot if you do that..)
copy the directory to your ps3 hdd0/game folder ...
rebuild the database, and you can play it fine.
