It's worth noting that:
  • 4.90 Firmware was released on February 27, 2023
  • 4.91 Firmware -> February 28, 2024

Reminder : Turn off "Automatic Updates" and do not update firmware if a 4.92 firmware does drops.

Edit: For user's not familiar with firmware updates and process here is just a quick overview.
.PS3HEN
You will need the following to happen before updating to 4.92
  • HFW - 4.92 (check this post about HFW not being needed and also this post why it could still serve some uses)
  • PS3HEN - 4.92
We suggest only using the official HFW builds to avoid issue's, it usually is released with the PS3HEN update or alongside.
CFW
If you are on a Custom Firmware already:
  • When a 4.92 Custom Firmware is released you can then install a CFW PUP via usb device, we suggest waiting for Evilnat's 4.92 CFW when that drops.
If you have updated to 4.92 Official Update (OFW) by mistake
  • You will need to wait for PS3 Toolset to be updated for 4.92 or Flash Writer (4.92) to be updated. We suggest PS3 Toolset unless an offline version is needed.
If you are just dusting it off:
  • just do not update and stay on a lower firmware then 4.92

I'm still on 4.86 with rebug...works fine for me, no need to update.

There is not much reason to update if everything works fine and suits your needs but there could be various reason's to update as shown below

With 4.86 REBUG LITE -- a Standard CEX Cobra (v8.2) CFW.

I've read stories of peoples systems not working properly after updating to evilnat then they try to revert and have problems reverting. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Maybe one day I'll have the courage to update. I'll have to set aside a whole weekend in case I have problems like others have had.

Its most likely people not understanding the differences between CEX, DEX and PEX/DPEX hybrids. Upgrading to a cfw from a previous version is as easy as it can be if you just stick to CEX.

Reverting is easy too if you just enable QA flags, simple as that.

Thanks man, I'll seriously consider it.

I found this post really interesting. It's always great to see the community discussing possible PS3 updates and what might change. Let's see what's coming!

I'm currently using 4.91 Evilnat DEX, and with rumors about a possible 4.92 update, I decided to take a look at the latest official PS3 updates from 4.84 to 4.91.
  • 4.84 (Feb 14, 2019) – Improved system performance.
  • 4.85 (Aug 28, 2019) – Improved system performance.
  • 4.86 (Mar 31, 2020) – Improved system performance.
  • 4.87 (Dec 3, 2020) – Improved system performance.
  • 4.88 (Jun 1, 2021) – Improved system performance.
  • 4.89 (May 10, 2022) – Security update: PSN login now requires a device password, and some account management functions were removed from PS3.
  • 4.90 (Feb 28, 2023) – Improved system performance.
  • 4.91 (Feb 27, 2024) – Improved system performance.
So far, nothing official about 4.92, but following the trend, it will probably be another stability/performance update. For those using CFW (like Evilnat) or HEN, it's always best to wait and see how the scene reacts before updating.

What do you think? Could there be something different this time?:confused3:

Nothing different, only the new BD keys so people can still watch new movies on the console.

Although, with all the hacking Sony had recently, perhaps we should see an update on the login process. It's just a big IF, nothing is certain as PSN support on the PS3 is practically dead.

We shall see.

Every time a new FW is out reminds me the "Circle of Life"

- Sony releases an OFW ✅
  • People update thinking HEN or CFW will continue working with the latest OFW :mad new: ✅
- HFW is made ✅
- PS3HEN is updated => proof with webMAN MOD loading is posted :encouragement: WIP
  • People who upgraded are happy again
- CFW Evilnat is updated => proof with webMAN MOD loading is also posted :encouragement: WIP
  • CFW users who don't upgraded are happy again
- Dual boot FW is updated
- PyPS3Tools is updated with a new nofsm_patch.bin
- PS3Toolset is updated
  • CFW users who upgraded are happy again
- Homebrews & XMB mods are updated
  • Wait for next year to repeat the next cycle...
