PS3 Do I need a Functioning BD Drive

I have been unable to find a definite answer on whether or not I need a fully functioning BD drive to install a CFW so I decided to ask directly. Currently I can boot to the XMB but trying to launch any installed game or app just causes a black screen nothing else, as my disc drive will no longer accept a disk in, I am assuming something is wrong with my BD drive. I had hoped that a CFW would still allow me to play my games from game files. However so people say I need a functioning BD drive to install a CFW to begin with, then I can install a noBD drive CFW but others have claimed to have been able to install CFW without a working drive.

As I do not want to get stuck in an updating loop I thought to ask here for clarification.
Thanks for any help.

Assuming you are currently on a supported firmware version (4.75+) and that your model supports CFW then you can use bgtoolset to jailbreak and then immediately install noBD CFW. Do not install any other firmware (not even OFW) or you'll brick your console.
