Do you have to reinstall the fw after upgrading the hard disk?

After years of wanting to upgrade the 60gb phat ps3 I ordered a 1tb drive which should come tomorrow, I've seen two different things at least in regards to ofw one video showed needing to install the firmware and another showing the ps3 going to the xmb after reformatting the new drive.
I've not hacked mine yet which is on 4.83 ofw, if I hack it and install the 4.89 cfw before changing the drive will I need to reinstall the cfw/ofw on it again?

  • NOR models needs firmware update file because they are to small and rest data is put on VFLASH partition on HDD.
  • NAND and eMMC models don't need firmware update file because they have all firmware data on those chips.

Do you know if I'll have to run the firmware update file or do I need to run the bgtoolset to check what my ps3 has?

So you gotta phat NAND based unit. You can hack it prior to getting the drive. And should be able to just swap the disc. I would t update to 4.89 OFW as the tools are not out to exploit that firmware. At least not yet as it should be launching this weekend. So it is really up to you. Once you are on CFW you will never need to install OFW ever again.

Ok thanks, the drive will be coming tomorrow so I'll probably be hacking it over the weekend/sometime next week.

The guy who wrote the guide on how to hack using bgtoolset told me to use the guide to hack on my current fw & install 4.89 evilnat, does this mean you don't need to be on the same ofw as the cfw you're installing as long as the cfw is equal or higher version?

But if the bgtoolset update is being released in the not too distant future I might wait, would allow me to upgrade the drive & connect to the psn to sync the trophies without risk of a ban then hack. Is there any issues and you'd recommend sticking to the 4.88 or lower ofw for hacking?

You can tell if your PS3 has NOR or NAND by the model number (CECH****). While the fact that you have a 60GB does point to the fact you have a NAND, It's normally best not to use the HDD size as an indicator as it might have been changed.

Looking at the back it says CECHC03, it's a UK release model as I got it not too long after it was released here. Been wanting to upgrade the hard disk for a decade or so, been thinking about hacking it for a year or two & finally getting around to both.

You have one of those backwards compatible PS3s, they're considered very valuable these days. They're prone to overheating and YLOD unfortunately so I'd seriously consider replacing thermal paste if you haven't done so yet.

Regarding your actual question, since it's NAND it means the entire firmware is on the NAND chip so it really doesn't matter if you install CFW before or after replacing the HDD. You won't have to reinstall the firmware at all on those models, it'll just need to format the drive. The only thing important is like atreyu said, don't accidentally update to OFW 4.89 yet.

thanks for reply tho a little late to the party as I've already hacked the ps3 & changed the hard disk, went with 4.89 evilnat.

Glad it worked for you. Still, the first part of my answer is still relevant - take good care of your console. Those are not easy to come across and when you do find them they're quite expensive. I recommend that you replace the thermal paste if you haven't done so already and use WebmanMod to monitor your CPU and GPU temperature.

I'm not confident enough to open up the ps3 so unless you can suggest someone in the UK it'll have to stay as is and when it dies it dies(hopefully it doesn't), as for webman mod yeah I have that installed.

Sorry but I'm not from the UK so I can't recommend anything specific. Still, mind that the thermal paste isn't something unique to ps3, it's the exact same thing used in every pc, so it's not an old part that a store can permanently run out of. just check with game console repair shops and if you find a guy/gal that used to work on ps3 they can definitely still do that.
