(thanks for the work <3)
((lol, no permissions to post links))

I had the assumption I'd just be able to dd/cat the hard drive image, pop it in my ps2 (fat, 300001), and be off to the races. Because fk Windon't, and I can't imagine this HDD Raw Copy Tool is doing anything more interesting.

Anyway, doesn't seem to be working, and I can't find reference to anyone else creating their initial FHDB from linux. Anyone care to offer advice, know someone who has accomplished this, or can comment on HDD Raw Copy Tool having some s3cr3t sauce?

@TnA I wrote "__mbr.raw" from your link directly to my HDD w/ cat and my PS2 still booted normally :/ Thank you for the alternative guide, though.

@Berion This looks great, thank you! I'll try building a FHDB image from scratch this weekend, per your guidance in "PS2 HDD Exploiter.sh" - and if I can't get that to boot on my PS2 maybe I have to accept defeat and buy a FMCB memory card, lol.

Image? You CANNOT write disk image with APA if its size is not equal to target disk. It will lead to APA corruption. You must format drive on PS2 or PC, not use anyone disk image.

Based on what you wrote, it seems your are one of those unlucky people who have disabled boot flag in NVM (some factories did that). Which means it must be enabled by i.e FHDB/PSBBL Installers. Or you did something wrong. :P

I'm pretty sure I didn't mess up "dd bs=4096 if=__mbr.raw of=/dev/sdX" lol ;p The drive spins up in the PS2 initially (I had some old spinning rust in a box) but then spins down and just boots normal.

Well that's annoying re: NVM boot flag. Thanks for saving me some time: I'll write this off for now and just order a FMCB card.

Aside: is there any reason to keep the HDD installed if I'm just going to boot off a memory card and maybe run a SMB share? This whole project started because I had all the parts available and I needed to flash firmware for a replacement laser. What a pain in the ass lol.
