Yes, that is another whole thing and a potential exploit. But it is only a proof of concept at the moment, and like you said it requires hardware stuff.

I believe that it is possible to reverse engineer how the random number is generated for the scrambled keys, but I'm not sure as Sony did their homework and revamped all the PS3 security.
If that were to be the case I assume people would try to aim for PS4 or PS5 first.

Also @NewCat if your PS3 was on CFW before you replaced the HDD, when it asks you to reinstall the FW after changing the HDD you can (and should) use the same CFW you have. You don't need to go through OFW.
My ps3 is using HEN 4.84.2 hfw right now, should I do what it says (putting an usb with hfw 4.84.2 in PS3/UPDATE/ in and press START and SELECT at the same time) ?

If it's running HFW and HEN you will be able to install HFW after replacing the disk. You will need to reinstall HEN though.

Hi everyone. I'm a noob and soft bricked my PS3? installing ccapi on hen without reading. Is there any way to fix this ? I've tried formatting a new ssd and still unable to get any signal or enter safe mode *no signal*. Is an E3 flasher the only way? Or should I just get a another PS3. Btw I'm on a PS3 slim CECH-2501A

PS3 with CFW such as Evilnat or Rebug will play burned discs. Not sure about HEN.

However - This is not recommended. Actually it's not recommended to play original discs either. Optical drive diodes degrade, not quickly, but after years of frequent use it may start struggling, and unlike PCs, the PS3's optical drive isn't really easy to replace. Due to this it is recommended to minimize the use of the optical drive as much as possible. Just use multiMAN to rip the entire game from the disc to the PS3's HDD and then play it from there. It will also make the game load faster.

PS3hen can play ps3 burned games on dvd,i tested it with ducktales.
Yeah, if games are under 8.5GB Cobra has no issues loading them from DVD discs. This doesn't work with Blu-Ray movies though, which is too bad. It will read Blu-Ray movies on BD-R though.

what ps3 will work on dvd-r?
Jailbroken PS3s (CFW and HEN) will play games from burned media, e.g., DVD-R, assuming of-course they fit. Since the PS3 natively uses Blu-Ray discs, games can go up to 50GB in size. A typical DVD-R is 4.7GB (single layer) or 8.5GB (dual layer) so many games just won't fit, and if you want them burned on discs you'll need to use BD-R, however if the game is small enough to fit on a DVD then it will work. The size issue only applies to PS3 games. PS2 games are natively distributed on DVDs and PS1 uses CDs so no size issues here, but mind that support for PS2 games on non-BC models is limited to pkg and ISO files on the hard drive. Only BC models will play PS2 games directly from DVD (whether original or burned).

The PS3 will also play DVD movies from DVD-R (that works even when on OFW) but will not play Blu-Ray BDMV movies from DVDs, even when they're small enough to fit (the so called BD9 format). It will play BDMV movies from BD-R though and it doesn't need to be jailbroken for that.

I mean which ps3 games will fit on dvd-r?
I don't think there's a list of the size of every PS3 game ever made.
Retro game packs usually fit. For instance "SEGA MEGA DRIVE Ultimate Collection" is just 570MB and will fit even on a CD-R.
From the games I have I know that "Enslaved: Odyssey to the West" and "Portal 2" will fit in a DVD-R DL. Most of the games I have won't fit on DVD though.
Also most Japanese visual novels will probably fit.

I know ducktales fits perfectly.
One more thing - If you already have the original disc, the best thing to do is to use the "Create ISO" function of multiMAN, then pull it from the PS3 using FTP and burn it with ImgBurn. If you only have it in JB format (i.e., the game files in a folder, rather than an ISO) then you can't just burn them to a disc and expect it to work. PS3 game discs are formatted in a special way and won't be recognized otherwise. You can use the "makeps3iso" and "genps3iso" tools to convert a game folder into a working ISO that you can burn but unfortunately you won't have the same physical file order as in the original disc, which could potentially lead to performance issues due to seek times. If you're gonna be using discs for your games you should generally stick to burning ISOs created directly from the original disc.

ODE means "Optical Drive Emulator", which is a component of the DECR development unit. It's basically used to emulate the speed and behavior of a real Blu-Ray disc. It was needed because BD-Rs were uncommon and super-expensive back in 2005. Anyway that option is only useful if you have one of those units, and you most probably don't (you would've definitely known if you had one). Always pick CFW.

Also, might I ask what source material are you trying to convert to ISO in the first place? If it's a game folder don't bother, just copy the entire folder to the GAMES directory on your PS3. If it's a pkg better keep it that way. If it's from PSN try using TrueAncestor to resign it.
