Hello and can you help a PS3 Newbie ! RE GTA V Update ?

Hey people, Totally new to forum so apols if I'm in wrong one. So here is the situation. Used to play GTA V years back on the GF's PS3 but it broke and I've only just got another PS3 as i remember enjoying chilling to it all those years ago. Now I've got the basic DVD installation and its not been updated or anything. I'm using the old HD out of the old ps3 ! The 'new' PS3 has never been modded, jail-broken, updated or altered in anyway as far as I know but it is second hand so its possible. My question is, are there resources still available to download that will allow me to update GTA V to the last supported version, with clear instruction on how to do so, and will my save games be lost ! Please remember I'm a total newbie to this sort of stuff so please don't assume I know what steps I will need to do to, well, basically do anything on a PS3 ! Apart from switch it on and off :/ Your help and PATIENCE are greatly appreciated. Thanks All

From what you've said you have the disc version of the game. So when you go to launch the game disc, you will be prompted to download the latest game update. You can decline, but you will not be able to sign into PSN without it (though downloading/installing the update itself does not require PSN login). Also, no, it will not break your saves as it's an official patch designed to update the game, which takes ongoing save files into consideration.

The PS3 (and Xbox 360) servers were shut down on December 2019, so no DLCs or free stuff from Social Club I'm afraid (and that includes the interactive map with the locations of collectables, missions, etc.).

Yes, Its the Disk Version, I don't remember seeing a prompt to download the latest version but it's not connected to the internet and Im guessing here but without that it might not unless it detects an active internet connection :/ I could move it and set it up next to the router and then try it again but that's a bit of a hassle. I was hoping i could download it and patch it via USB but if its more reliable to allow it to patch itself then i will just set it up next to the router tomorrow. I don't want to break my saves but I can see from the other post that this wont be a problem. However if the servers are down how will it update ?

Without an internet connection, no, you won't be prompted to download a game update. It is possible to download the patch in .pkg format but that would require a modded PS3 system, so for an unmodded system the official is the most straightforward (and really the only way). As for servers being down; the game update comes from Sony's servers, not Rockstar's so the in-game servers including Social Club are not related to the console game patch itself.

Thanks Guys, One final thing, not related but you will likely know. Does the PS3 super slim support SSD drives and how large or fast does it support ? I'm thinking about upgrading as the old drive is a little long in the tooth and would like to back it up onto a replacement ssd and then swap them over !

some work fine, some work for a while, and some give problems right away. just remember that SSD is newer than PS3 so it can not take full advantage of the speed.
