Hello PSX-Place!

Forum Noob
Hi!

I finally joined after lurking for years. I'm interested in everything related to PS2 and PS3 software, especially reverse-engineering games and file formats.

I've been working on a tool to import custom songs into SingStar PS3 and PS2, as well as combining existing SingStar discs into an all-in-one song library for PS3.
It's in a pretty stable state now, but I'm not sure if links are allowed here, so I'll refrain from posting it to avoid self-promotion :encouragement:

I saw some previous discussions about SingStar and would love to get involved and get feedback from other PS3 users.

See you around!

welcome!

there is some discussion on the forum about the topic. sharing songs would not be allowed. tools would depend on what it does really.

if the tool processed some files after user provides keys and files, probably would not be a problem.

Thanks for welcoming me, and for the clarification!

Of course, sharing songs or DLC is completely out of the question. I think there could be some legal grey areas regarding the PS2 side of the tool, since I have to bundle LBA data (unusable on its own) for proper ISO building. Apart from that, the PS3 side requires the user to supply the needed files, and everything else is generated at runtime.

I'll keep getting familiar with the forum, participate in other threads and won't focus on this tool.
I definitely don't want to break any rules :encouragement:

By the way, when you say "keys", does that include PS3 Redump keys? I assumed these were okay to bundle since they're publicly available on Redump, but perhaps I was wrong. Still learning every day!

i am not sure. the checksums they provide are fine but the disc keys may not be. i don't really remember. (the disc keys can be obtained from the disc itself so they are easy to get for redump's intended purpose of disc image verification.)

Okay, noted! I'll wait for someone with more experience than me to confirm whether or not it is okay to post it here. It's one of the first Google results that comes up when looking for "custom SingStar" and things like that, and it's also been reposted on various subreddits.

I do have some other homebrew and tools I made for PS2 that are completely legal and open-source. I'm mainly looking for feedback, bug reports and improvements, so I'm looking forward to that!

i see it on github. seems that it can take songs from one game and lets you put them into a different game in the series. that should be fine (as long as the user owns both games, but that's on them).

if it allows you to get songs from any game that you don't own (game or song), that would be different.

does it allow you to make your own songs to import? that would be cool and totally fair use as far as i understand it.

there are a few threads on the forum where we have discussed some of the grey areas. if you haven't read them yet, they may help you to get an idea of what is acceptable.

Alright!

It is not a "downloader", so it only works with stuff that the users provide and doesn't let them download or acquire anything. It doesn't connect to the internet, apart for syncing and updating an existing song library directly on the PS3 via FTP (local network only), which is optional.

Yes! It supports importing & converting songs from the UltraStar (.TXT) format, so users can add any song from their UltraStar library to their custom SingStar disc/library. There are several editors out there to create your own UltraStar karaoke songs in .TXT format, it's pretty fun.
