Help with 80010017 error on 4.88.2 Evilnat CFW on Slim PS3

I am not new to hacking PS3s but I am new to hacking the PS3 Slim. Not really sure this makes a difference here but just thought I'd mention that.

So I acquired a PS3 Slim and decided to put CFW on it. I had done a system restore on it first because I didn't want to risk getting the previous user's account banned in case I did something I shouldn't have. I successfully installed Evilnat's 4.88.2 CFW, Multiman, and Webman Mod. However, I keep getting "an error occurred during the start operation (80010017)" whenever I try to load a PS3 ISO from my internal hard drive. Cobra is enabled. I thought maybe it had something to do with this PS3 not being able to read discs anymore. So I tried installing the noBD CFW but I am still having the same issue. I can load PSP games and PS1 games without any issues. Can anyone help me troubleshoot and find out why this is happening? Thank you.

Make sure that the iso is decrypted. How did you make the iso ?

Is the bd drive working properly try to insert a real disc and see if it plays, if the bd drive is broken then even if you install noBD CFW it wont allow you to play PS3 Game Backups

The game was made through multiman on my Phat model PS3 and it works there. The Blu-ray drive on the slim PS3 doesn't work at all. When I put a disc in, it makes all kinds of loud clicking noises like something inside is going to break. And no matter how long I wait, it never shows the game on the XMB.

So you're saying that if the Blu-ray drive doesn't work, then PS3 backups will never work on this PS3? Would digital games work? And if so, is there a way to turn a disc game into a digital game? I know the Wii U has a method of doing that. Thanks.

the drive may not read at all but still not be "broken". it is surely broken if all pkg games and homebrews will not work.

I'm able to load up Multiman and pkgi so I guess it's not completely broken. But I definitely can't play PS3 ISOs. Is it hard to fix or replace one?

i always used multiman to rip to iso. just takes time. never had to do anything to an iso after ripping.

Make sure that the iso is decrypted.

So I'm dumb. The games I was trying to use were the ones I had stored on my computer. I like to keep my games on my computer named and organized according to Redump and I had forgotten that Redump requires the games to be encrypted. So I took the game I was trying to load directly off my Phat PS3 instead and transferred it to my Slim and it worked.

Is there any way to have the PS3 load encrypted games? And if not, is there an easy way to batch decrypt them on my PC. I have all the same games on my Phat PS3 but I feel like it would be faster to convert and FTP over from my PC rather than copying from my Phat PS3 to my Slim several times over USB (I only have a 32 GB flash drive). Thank you.

So you are saying that after you decrypted the game [made into decrypted iso format] it worked on the slim which has broken BD drive.
But afaik that wont work, is the game in iso format or pkg format

On Wii U the exploits work in a different way, for the Wii U the NUS format is equivalent to the pkg format on the ps3. On the PS3 the game will work in pkg format regardless if the bd drive is broken or not.

However, the PS3 also has disc rips which can be in JB format or ISO format (Wii U doesn't have this format, ). Games in this format, when mounted via the MAN's or any other backup manager, make the PS3 think that the actual disc for the game is inserted (this is why you see a game disc icon when mounted the game, also this is why it is said that when mounting backups the bd drive should be empty as otherwise, the PS3 will run the actual game in the bd drive and not the backup mounted). This is achieved by redirecting the bd drive.
Since in case of a broken bd drive the ps3 sees the drive is broken and therefore refuses to run the game by an actual disc and since mounting the game also works by redirecting the bd drive that functionality also breaks. Hence, when mounting game backups the bd drive is not used for playing your game but still since it is used for redirecting to the path your backup is present (internal HDD / USB / Network) a broken bd drive means broken redirecting and so games mounted also don't show up on the XMB.

You can use the pre-hen era tools like CFW2OFW to convert your disc-based games into the pkg format, they will work fine.

That only happens when the BD drive's main PCB is damaged. If the faulty part is the laser or anything mechanic (motor etc.) the firmware will still see the drive as valid and pkg games will start.

So I think I had multiple issues going on here. First I assumed that the drive was broken because of all the noise it was making and the fact that it never displayed the game when I had a disc inserted. But I guess it's not completely broken as there was one time (after making a lot of awful clicking noises) the game icon actually showed up on my XMB and launched a game. So i won't say the drive is broken but it is definitely unreliable and on its way out.

The other issue (which is the biggest one) was that I didn't realize that I was trying to load an encrypted ISO. It was probably about a decade ago when I backed up all my PS3 games and don't really remember how I did it or what tools I used. But now I remember I needed the ISOs on my computer to remain encrypted so that I could verify and organize them using Redump's datfiles. And when I started messing around with PS3 hacking again I just assumed the ISOs on my computer would work.

So to make a long story short, everything started working once I started using decrypted ISOs.

Thank you for that explanation. It was very helpful. In my searches I discoved that ps3netsrv can decrypt ISOs on the fly so I'm going to give that a try.

A small correction from my side, on the Wii U the equivalent to JB/ISO format for the PS3 we have the Loadiine format

I have a similar problem. PS3 Slim, with last version of Evilnat and Webman Mod (so, it is supposed to los encrypted ISO's). Webman Mod loads the list of games (redump ISOs and keys). I can see them and if I stay over them, I see the background image or trailers (so, it is supposed to be able to read something of the ISO… I don't think this data to be downloaded from internet) . If I select one of them, I can see the icon of "disc mounted" and it starts loading. But after that… 80010017 error :-(

As the BD drive is not fine (reads dvd but not BD), I have tried to install the "no-BD" version of the CFW. But it is worse. Webman Mod doesn't even recognizes the ISOs as games.
And I think that the drive is perfectly fine for it's light job or redirecting and let the ISO be loaded. So, I will reinstall normal version of CFW.

What could be happening? 8-(

The no-BD CFW is only needed if the optical drive controller daughterboard is broken. If it reads DVDs but not BDs it means that the problem is the blue laser diode and not the daughterboard, so you should definitely use the regular CFW and not the no-BD variant (which is known to break backwards compatibility, which can explain why webMAN MOD won't recognize your ISOs).

Regarding your other issue - You should really only dump your games on the PS3 itself using multiMAN / IRISMAN (another reason you should really consider getting that laser diode fixed). Even if you do happen to have one of those rare PC BD drives that can read PS3 discs, they are encrypted and cannot be played without being decrypted first using an IRD file (I cannot link to websites offering those due to legal reasons but a simple Google search would get you what you need). AFAIK webMAN MOD cannot do the decryption for you - you have to decrypt it on your computer first and only then transfer the decrypted game to the PS3. There's a tool called IRD ISO Patcher that can decrypt PS3 ISOs if you have the matching IRD.

nobd cfw can not use iso at all. iso appear to be a disc in the drive and of course the drive does not work so ps3 gets confused. folder format must be used.

also ps2 will not work IIRC.

If ISOs appear like a disc then how come Evilnat CFW can play PS2 ISOs but no discs?

ps3 will reboot into ps2 mode to play them. they appear like ps2classics so an encrypted iso is loaded from hdd by ps2 mode software. we tell ps2 mode which ps2classics game folder we want to load. on hen the iso is still encrypted inside that folder.

i am not sure how we use iso without encryotion on cfw. maybe i have forgotten or maybe i never knew...i can't remember. :confused3: i assume either (at least part of) cobra stays loaded or the ps2 emulator files contain some patch (like the modded one that shows temps}.

surely @aldostools or @bguerville knows.

First time I tried, Webman could see all the encrypted ISOS I had in the external HD (but they couldn't start). Now, It only sees the only one that is not encrypted. And the game runs OK.

With latest versions of Webman and Cobra, it is possible to run decrypted ISOs as long as you put the .key file with them. (with the same version of Evilnat CFW and Webman MOD that I'm testing now).

I'll continue testing...

(please, excuse me if I don't write correctly in english language)
