PS3 HEN Flash Patcher (development discussion)

Nice, this tool will be useful for all of us in the ps3 community, I have a doubt, when you enter this homebrew, does the usb stick need to be connected to the ps3 to be able to save nofsm_patch_489.bin?
Yes, USB storage will always be something that is mandatory for this process. Mostly for backups that won't be lost in case of a software/PS3 hardware failure (of course, keeping the file safe is up to the user).

As to if it will be required to store all patches on the USB too, I hope not. But it's not a big issue for the user anyway, since you already need to store the firmware files there. It doesn't really matter if you need to copy 256 MB PUP, or that and an extra 7 MB patch.

Awesome work @kostirez1. I've not been able to find any testers for the flash writer, but this looks very promising and I hope the outcome will be different for you.

Will be nice to have an offline alternative for CFW installation for the first time in a few years. I do hope the reports of bgtoolset returning soon are accurate also.

Oh yes, will this homebrew work for ps3 that are damaged? example wireless module and blu-ray drive?

it would work. you would need to install a noBT or noBD cfw pup afterwards of course.

Good! thank you for clearing the doubts! anything if you need a tester to test this hombrew you can count on me i will be available. And happy new year to all you devs:victorious:

Please take note everyone:

If you want to give encouragement or thanks please do it in the form of a "like" not a post in a DEVELOPMENT THREAD. I am sure @kostirez1 would likely appreciate that,as he has already mentioned in this thread..

In general Development threads are not for random chatter, but for post about the actual topic and its for people to give insight / help / advice to reach a goal

@kostirez1 I can get a test console from eBay if you want me to help you test. Do you need to test any specific model?
Hi, thank you for your willingness to help. In theory, any PS3 model with the first version of metldr (Fats or Slims up until ~2011) should be enough. A model with NOR memory will do, it will also make installing the flasher easier. The cheapest option would probably be any non backwards compatible Fat, but it also depends on the flasher used - flash clips seem to work better with Slim models.

If possible, a 3.3V UART to USB bridge to read Syscon output during boot would also be useful. They are usually sold on Ebay or Amazon with chips like CP2102 or FT232RL for a couple of bucks. This can help us figure out and test how to construct the faster and safer patch file. :encouragement:

I'll try to get a 21XX or 20XX one cause it seems that phats are a little more difficult to come by these days, however it might be possible to also get a CECHC04 BC console if you're interested.
Please give me links to recommended flashers so I can buy one.
I already have a 3.3V UART bridge (I use it mainly for wireless router modding) but please mind that giving me something to solder is probably the best way to destroy it, so I'm not inclined to mess with syscon.
Overall I'm gonna get those consoles for cheap (around $70 each) so it's no biggie if they end up getting bricked.

It sounds like that every country has a different distribution of used models. Backwards compatible consoles sound great, but I wouldn't risk destroying it just for this purpose. Maybe we can find someone who has a NAND flasher installed already, eventually.

I can't really provide much help regarding this. I only used E3 NOR flasher for my bricked Fat and I didn't have any luck with the clip, so I had to solder it directly. That unfortunately resulted in a torn off pad and I barely recovered the board (had to solder a wire between two points, it barely hangs on there). Slim models looked much easier in old videos, mostly because you can run it outside the case with a clamp like in this video by NSC. I'm also going to try that when I get some time and that awful security torx T8 bit. :highly amused:

Be aware that most of the ones from China and such are clones, so it might be better to find a used one somewhere near you.

Fellow network device modder here, that is so cool. I have destroyed so many second hand low cost TPLinks and ancient Routerboards before doing the first successful SPI flash and RAM chip swaps. The only way to fail that is to give up trying. :congratulatory:

As for the Syscon UART test points, I think you can destroy the pads without breaking the board (at least on Fat models). It should be connected the same way as the ones in routers, as opposed to NOR flash test points that are a part of the NOR chip to south bridge path. Maybe there are some other things to watch out for, though. We are lucky to have RIP-Felix and others who specialize in Syscon related stuff on this forum.

Guess I'll get a slim then and the BC as well cause if you can get a BC for less than $100 it would be a crime not to lol
I would really appreciate if you post a link a proper flasher, preferably on eBay or Amazon .
