You'll need webMAN MOD and ps3-updatelist.txt
Copy the file to /dev_hdd0/ps3-updatelist.txt and reboot.
Yes thank you I'm online with hfw 4.89 now can confirm it works.

Anyone using this method should be warned you can get a possible ban you should be ok with syscals disabled use it at your own risk.
Be sure to update to the latest hen and hfw once it becomes available this is a temporary solution

Don't understand the fascination with going online on a third gen console?

Use your PS4, it's safer.

It is seriously not recommended to spoof version 4.90 at the moment.

4.90 has some changes to lv2 which are not fully understood yet. While not very high, the possibility of these changes being detectable online (and therefore allowing Sony to detect and ban anyone who spoofs the new version) cannot be discarded.

Better just wait for proper support. It dos not seem that 4.90 blocks the exploit used to install HEN so 4.90 based HFW and HEN are to be expected, and if you're on CFW, Evilnat has confirmed that 4.90 based Evilnat CFW is coming as well.

>complaining about using the PS3 online for games (with no implications of piracy mentioned) on a PS3 forum
>recommending to 'just use the PS4 instead'

guess somebody hasn't heard of places where the PS4 is still astronomically expensive due to inflation/governmental corruption (eg most of Latin America), that and the games with online still playable that weren't remastered or ported to PC (sufficiently).

then again it's high risk without true CFW for sure, odd how Soyny care about banning CFW/HEN users but won't care to chuck the exploit out. tbh the PS3 Store's state is pretty much asking for piracy LMAO

Probably because Sony doesn't really care about piracy on the PS3. PS3 game sales on the PSN store can't be really high anyway and I guess that most people prefer buying physical copies at retro game stores instead.
The reason Sony keeps banning CFW / HEN users at this point is mainly to block cheaters in multiplayer games.

The lv2 changes are related to the source code sony used, it's identical as the 4.80 one

Good I guess, I noticed a recent uptick in hackers on some of the CoD games. Mostly MW2 and BO2.

Luckily World at War is hardly affected anymore on PS3 (likely more to do with sk8erlewiss's multimod menu being almost impossible to find online these days, and the skids who were running those mods now moving over to crap up MW2 and BO2), and it's one of the only ones that accounts that played the game's multiplayer before 26th May 2018 can rank up on, besides CoD4 and Ghosts/AW.

Also 4.90 breaks the system's auto turn-off feature. I woke up at 5am and I left my PS3 on all night, yet the setting is set to 4 hours. No "system will power off soon" message either. (inb4 the EU start raging because wasn't there a directive about electronics auto-off requirements? that and the EU are petty buggers anyways)

Edit: apparently typing W @ W without the spaces triggers the email protection filter... applying a check to see if there's a dot in the text after the @ would fix this, else stuff like 'localhost' in terminal logs get blocked too

I did the test here in 20min, the control turned off as programmed and after 10 minutes the system also turned off. Therefore, the automatic shutdown of the system continues to work without problems.

I had the web browser open if that's of any note. Been using it lately since PC is broken (Glype proxies are a godsend).
