PS3 Installation of PS2 games on a PAL PS3 with BC

I don't know if this is the right place to put such a question. Feel free to move the thread to the correct section if this isn't correct.

Hi,

As some of you may know, a few select PS2 titles could be installed on a real PS2 with an HDD installed and Sony replicated this behavior on BC PS3s if the PS2 System Data package is installed on the hard drive. Usually it should ask before the start of the disc if we want to install the game, but it doesn't ask at all on my PS3. I wonder if this because PS2 games are usually region locked and shouldn't work at all on a PAL PS3 or if something else is going on here. I tried SOCOM II and 3 to no avail.

https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/PS2_Emulation#Virtual_PS2_HDD
https://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/game/hddinstall.html

I'm kinda at a loss here. Maybe other members could try it out and report back or some of the devs here have an idea why it doesn't work.
Thank you in advance.

You could try to change the system region via debug setting (iirc is only avaible on dex debug settings so dex/rex/pex cfw).

If it is not working maybe it will work only with full bc console using ps2_emu and not with ps2_gxemu.

Btw bc ps3 are the one with ee+gs while ps3 with only gs are called semi bc, so your console is a semi bc one (ps2 gxemu), not a standard bc (ps2 emu).

Probably hdd installation is only avaible on bc console, not on semi bc console, but its just a supposition based on the fact you said it doesnt work on your semi bc even if here https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/Talk:Emulation#PS2_HDD its written that semi bc console support hdd installation (but it would be strange that, if gx emu support hdd installation, then soft emu - basically gx emu transformed in full software emulator - hadnt inherit this functionality).

If u solve the issue by changing the region settings in debug settings then you could ask evilnat to find a patch to enable hdd installation even on semi bc pal ps3 and include it in his cfw

I don't think it would be that strange considering all other functionality is identical with EE+GS PS3 systems. You even get the better upscaling for 480p content

I am not talking about upscaling and performances, im talking about the fact that softemu is a child of gxemu and that it has inherited even cdvd code (softemu cant run ps2 classic) and also some configs inside the self (but hasnt external config support of netemu, exactly as gx emu) so if soft emu doesnt support ps2 installation probably also gx emu doesnt support that feature and thats why it doesnt work on semi bc console. Thats because in some ways softemu is more similar to gx emu than to netemu.

Also info on psdevwiki about softemu could be wrong, and maybe both gx and softemu support hdd installation but as u cannot install hdd games I told you to try to change region settings on dex debug settings to check if you can install ps2 games on hdd or not

You forget that ps2_gxemu was also based on ps2_emu. They were all based on each other with each iteration getting more functionality on it's own.

Thats not entirely true, as netemu is a strange child of softemu that hasnt inherited network support, a lot of peripherals support and even the cdvd support (even if it seems that there are some cdvd support trace left).

Yes gx emu is a child of ps2 emu but that doesnt mean that every feature of ps2 emu are avaible and exactly the same on gx emu.

The same has happend with ps1 netemu that is a child of ps1 emu but hasnt support for cd rom. Also ps1 newemu is a child of ps1 netemu but doesnt have support for ps1 classic.

This just to say that the child doesnt inherit every spec of the parents but there will be some difference.

And remember that gx emu is more similar to ps2 soft emu than to standard ps2 emu https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/PS2_Emulation#PS2_emulators_workload_comparison so its reasonable that if a feature is not present in ps2 softemu then probably also gx emu doesnt have that feature.

Anyway have you solved the problem by changing region via debug settings? Or it still doesnt work?

Actually i don't know which region setting it is.

Well the region setting in dex debug setting shows which region your console is.

Also if it is a pal console then it is europe so there is no problem in changing the region for trying ps2 game installation.

Also you could know the region of the console just by the serial number: as an example a ps3 slim cech 2104 is an european console while cech2101 is an american console, just look at psdev wiki to understand region codes

https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/SKU_Regioning

https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/SKU_Models

Just change the region to north america, reboot the console, try the installation, change the region back to europe and reboot.

Then if it works just ask evilnat to find a patch to allow that on non ntsc console, otherwise we need to update the wiki to remove the compatibility from the semi bc console (from here https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/Talk:Emulation#PS2_HDD )

So i tested it now, and it still doesn't ask me for installation. Maybe an OG disc is needed to trigger that. I only have a burned copy of the NTSC version and my PAL version obviously doesn't support install. And WebMan Mod also doesn't work.

The only way to verify that is to ask someone with ntsc 60gb full bc ps3 to test out a ntsc iso via webman: if it install then the 80gb semi bc doesnt support that feature, if it does not install (maybe because cobra change something about that) then some devs could fix it in cobra code and maybe this will make installation working even on 80gb semi bc models (probably a patch for console region will be needed for that to work).

anyway, based on softemu observation, i think that Sony, for probably no reason, has removed the code during the development of gx emu and thats why also softemu lacks that functionality
