Issue with PS3 HDD

So i have installed 1TB hard drive and it shows space 827/931 GB.
I was wondering that there must be some issue with Ps3 formating the HDD since it wasted 100GB of space? I have done clean instal and the format on Ps3 HDD. This must be a Ps3 software related issue right?

Every HDD has less storage capacity than you think, that's because the manufacturers use the MB unit as a multiple of 10 instead of a power of 2 like most of the people are used to.
  • 1 mebibyte = 1 048 576 B = 220 bytes.
  • 1 megabyte = 1 000 000 B = 106 bytes.
So it's expected to have less true capacity (that's your 931 GB).

Now, after the PS3 OS formats the drive, it will reserve some space in order to create the file structure and install everything that the OS needs (which can take a lot of GB of space).

But the system also reserves some additional space "just in case", which takes more of your precious GB. On CFW and HEN you can unlock that reserved space with this tool: PS3 Unlock HDD Space.

I was reading about this 8% stuff which is very bad Os build mistake Sony made since thats the reason they never released biger HDD on Ps3 because they would have had to put even biger HDD in the Ps3

Yes, I believe Sony's PS3 devs were pushed with the release deadline and didn't have time to know and learn their own architecture. So they went for the simple and well known path: FAT32 and easy code porting. But who knows, maybe it was a decision made even before the first prototypes were manufactured.
