i didn't do anything. the HEN_UPD.pkg method was added to hen long ago so that it could be updated offline easily. the instructions are in the developers zip i know, but maybe also in the release zips in the readme.txt

placing the BIN on usb and enabling from there was added as a way to test new versions without installing. you can actually switch to usb based hen from the hybrid firmware tools menu on xmb after hen is installed.
