I am a complete noob I have a compatible ps3(3.40) I don't really know where to start all I'm wanting to do is play around with my console and have fun in gta v offline story mode with mods

if your on 3.40 you can just install 3.55 official firmware, create a folder inside your usb flash drive and name it PS3 and then inside the PS3 folder create a new folder and then name that one UPDATE and then download this file: https://mega.co.nz/#!NVwRGIQS!Pml4diGNhW3aMJe1mnSirW_66gAZKZnWo6cmqKMDvqU and put it inside the UPDATE folder and then in the XMB go to Settings > System Update > Update via Storage Media and then you can start installing the 3.55 firmware.

and then once your on 3.55 you can then install any custom firmware like Rebug 4.84.2 straight from there, by downloading it's UPDAT.PUP file and put it in the same UPDATE folder like before and then go to Update via Storage Media again.

i think he did say he is on 3.40 he meant his ps3 Minimum Factory Version is 3.40 if he is on 3.55 or lower he just need to install CFW PUP directly if he is on 3.56+ he need to use NOR Flasher cause normaly his ps3 is slim model and all slims are NOR :

• install 4.84 HFW Twice then use
• NOR Dumper to verify that both ros0&ros1 are on same fw version and dump with 138 cheks is OK
• then use NOR Flasher to flash ps3 with 3mb flash_484.hex
• then re do NOR Dumper to verify that the dump is patched correctly and still valid before rebooting the PS3 if dump is good
• then restart ps3 install 4.84 CFW of your choice

I'm on 4.84 but I did the checker and it said 3.40 that's as far as I got

And what kind of cfw is good for what I'm trying to do

I'm on 4.84 the chercker said it was 3.40 that's as far as I got on jailbreaking it my main problem was not having a wired controller an I kinda got lost on all that part to

First, I think you will need a wired controller.
So, Rebug is a great option.
