PS3 Manually install/uninstall PKG

In the interest of minimising idle uptime of my console, as well as having a better understanding of how it works, I'd like to know what needs to be done to install/uninstall PKGs without use of the PKG installer on the console itself.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to connect the hard drive to my computer and perform everything on it, then attach it to the console and be able to play straight away, but anything that lets me shorten idle time is good.

as far as I can remember, all you need to do is delete the corresponding game folder in dev_hdd0/game/title_id , then rebuild the database. it might not save much time if you have a lot of games though, having to rebuild the database, I mean. possibly entering a random game might be enough to update it without having to do so.

PKG files are like ZIP files: they are file containers. That's all.

The Package Manager process the PARAM.SFO file in order to know where to put the PKG content.

Thus, PKG can not be "uninstalled". As Charles_n_town said before, the only way is to delete all the extracted content corresponding to the PKG (most of them are in a single folder, so no big issue), and then rebuild the database in order for the PS3 to detect the changes.

Connecting the PS3 HDD to a PC requires the ERK and some scripts from @Berion. But writing support on UFS2 is really limited and prone to corrupt the whole HDD, so it's not recommended.

There are many different types of PKG files.
- PSN PKG games are easily uninstalled just pressing Triangle on the game icon created on XMB and selecting Delete. They can be deleted manually from /dev_hdd0/game folder. Deleting these folders usually also delete the installed DLC and game updates. But some games create additional game data folders.

- PS1/PS2/PSP games and homebrews are uninstalled like PSN games.

- DLC PKG files can be deleted from Game Data menu in XMB, but it will delete all the game data and game updates installed.

- Theme PKGs installed can be deleted from XMB > Settings > Theme menu or deleting the theme files from /dev_hdd0/theme

- License PKGs install EDAT files in /dev_hdd0/home/<user-account>/exdata. They only can be deleted manually.

- Custom PKGs like the ones used by PS3HEN or webMAN MOD updater are more difficult to uninstall, due the PKG could have replaced system files and the files could be installed in multiple locations. They can be deleted manually checking what the PKG installed.

Some games and DLC can be installed on external HDD formatted in FAT32. But work if the files are smaller than 4GB due the limitation of that file system. This require to install the files to the USB drive with the external gameDATA enabled (SELECT+SQUARE) or extract the PKGs directly to /GAMEI folder and mount the game using webMAN MOD.

Also some PSN games work from remote storage using ps3netsrv. They don't have the 4GB limitation, but the folder is mounted read-only. Therefore it's only compatible if the game doesn't write files to the game folder. They need to be mounted through webMAN MOD.

If You unpack PKG and transfer contents of it to HDD, then it is fastest way. But, there are two downsides: UFS2 support in kernel is experimental for long time (probably because there are pierdylion UFS kind of filesystems ;]). So far it is totally fine in read but writing was never tested enough. Consider it as unsafe in long term (affecting nodes). Last downside is that user must do rebuild database from recovery menu to populate database by info from SFOs.

Hey! Guys pls advise. I have a hen ps3.
I've downloaded an ISO, unpacked it on the internal hdd. Let's take Assassin's Creed - The Americas Collection for example.

When I launch the game from webMan and it mounts it also shows other blue discs with pkg files in it that I can install. After installation I'd like to delete them so those extra discs won't show up.
I found that there's PKGDIR folder inside the ISO file with those package files but after deleting it extra discs still show but with a blank name.
How can I remove those pkgs so they won't show up?

Ciao durante l'installazione di un file PKGHi while installing a pkg file I get an error with each attempt I make and it is the following 8001003A.I found online that it could be a problem inherent in USB.I tried to copy the pkg to the "packages" folder inside the hard drive of the console and I tried to install it from there by removing the USB support but I get the error mentioned again 8001003A. I have a SILM Series 2000 with Evilnat 4.91, it was given to me by a friend. The problem with my console is that despite having a lot of games accumulated over the years, the record reader is broken. So the only way is to run the back up. L copies, but I don't go very far if when I try to install the PKG I have this problem,I have tried several but I have always gotten the usual problem. Thanks
