Maximum internal HDD size

I first modded my PS3 when CFW was first a thing and 640GB HDDs were big.

Thinking of going bigger, what's the biggest internal that can be installed?

Also, what's the best way to install a new HDD and copy all my stuff from the old one? I'd like to activate the PS3 after that too. Do I need to go online briefly to do that?

Personally, I think a 1TB 7200rpm drive is perfect for the PS3, Fast and reliable.
Just go external HDDs for anything bulky.

SSHD was painful with random slowdowns and other issues. SSDs are troublesome too I'm told. (but haven't tried personally)

I tried a 1.5TB drive a few times and it would format and function fine, but if you hit X to check the file system after a bad shutdown it would fail immediately and leave no option other than format, Even after a restart.
That was on a fat CECHE PS3, I didn't try on my slims to see if they had better stability with drives greater than 1TB.

As for the files you can use the inbuilt backup utility. (soooo slow)
Then you will only need PSN to sync trophies.

You can manually copy files via FTP etc if you know exactly what you want to keep though for a much faster option. (still need psn for trophies)

I've got 1tb internal and a 2tb external. Still need to store all pkg's on a separate drive tho.

This is an alternative for external storage, in ebay etc there are some brands that are not expensive

Edit:
Hmmm, just to be clear... is a PC bay for 3.5" hdds
Is handy if you have the PS3 and PC connected by ethernet cable (so FTP transfer speeds in between PC and PS3 are good)
Also, allows to dedicate a hdd for PS3 and connect it when needed.... rest of the time you can take it out so is not spinning in a pointless way forever while using the PC for other tasks
