Details:

PS3HEN 3.03
Current FV: 4.88

My goal is to install REBUG 4.84.

Which steps should I follow in order to achieve this without any errors?

I might add that my PS3 Phat is indeed compatible with CFW.

Use the PS3 Toolset's Flash Memory Manager in the ps3 browser to jailbreak the console, reboot & install Evilnat's 4.88.2 CFW from Recovery Mode (enter recovery with the power button sequence), once the CFW is installed boot into XMB & toggle QA (using a QA toggler) then reboot to apply the changes.
Finally you can install the Rebug REX 4.84.2 PUP file.
For more info about the jailbreak procedure, refer to the guide by Coro called "jailbreak with bgtoolset".

Hey, a couple of things. Why do I need Evilnat's CFW first?

And I heard that there is a 4.88 rebug but it is unofficial? Would that be better?

There is no Rebug 4.88, the team had already disbanded by the time 4.88 came out & there is no available DEX firmware pup past 4.84 to make a proper REX release with.
Other people might have repacked old Rebug REX 4.84.2 files into a 4.88 pup & added a newer Cobra but that will not make a proper REX 4.88 release.

You need to install Evilnat's 4.88.2 CFW first because you cannot downgrade the firmware to REX 4.84.2 without QA enabled & you cannot enable QA without CFW.

If QA is properly enabled, installing the Rebug REX (not D-REX) 4.84.2 PUP file should work just fine..

I wanted to make an identical thread, but I think I'd rather ask here.
When patching the system over HFW, should I remove it along with HEN and hombrew apps like webMAN, or not activating HEN before patching will be enough?

I also wanted to make a separate thread with a similar question. No answer for the past 5 months has me wondering if I should, even though it is most efficient for the site to just post here....

I'm currently on HFW 4.88, with Hen 3.0 installed. I am excited at the prospect of finally gaining full CFW, but I'm unclear as to the correct procedure. It seems like multiple posts on this exact question have different answers: install Evilant CFW right on top of current HFW; first uninstall HFW, then install CFW; first uninstall HFW, then jailbreak using PS3toolset, then install CFW. And all answers have reported successful upgrades to CFW from Hen. I'm very confused, and don't wanna screw this up, naturally. Hoping for a reply sooner than half a year from now

You can't install CFW atm since bgtoolset is down due to the ps3xploit domain fiasco. It will be back eventually but no eta yet. When it does come back up I don't think there's any difference between jailbreaking from HFW than from OFW since HFW is just OFW with a specific exploit that allows the installation of HEN. As far as CFW installation is involved they should be identical, though I probably would opt to go through OFW just because it's more properly tested that way. Still, don't go to OFW until bgtoolset is back up.

Thank you for your reply, and you may already be aware, but there is now a workaround to install bgtoolset. It was provided by the man himself, and can be found in another thread here, in this forum. It involves changing the DNS address to get to an alternative... not sure what to call it, it's not exactly a different website -- maybe a different server? Sorry, I am clearly not well-versed or knowledgeable about the proper lingo. But you should find it easily enough. I was able to install bgtoolset that way, and subsequently, installed Evilnat's cfw (at least, I was able to do that last week, hopefully it's still available...)
