NTSC Ps1 Discs on PAL PS3 SS

Hello.
I'd like to know wether such backwards compatibility is possible or not on PS3 Super Slim these days, and if is, what mods/exploits do allow that.
Thanks.

Every PS3 is backward compatibility with PSX. However, for discs there is region lock which is not for digital content from PSS.

You can try the Lid Swap Method, but i am unsure if it bypasses the Region Encoding on the PS3, i don't own a Super Slim anymore so i cant test in that regard, although I did try with PAL PSOne backups on a PAL Super Slim.

The PS3 uses two specific Emulators for PSOne, one for Discs (PS1Emu.self) and another for PSOne Classics (PS1Net_Emu.self),the Net Emu is the one that is Region Free, mostly because the region lock is ignored via PSOne Classics Library, the other one uses Disc Based Emulation encoded into the Consoles Region, i believe the Cobra Payload also ignores this Region Encoding on CFW Machines via ISO, i am not sure if HEN can reproduce PlayStation Format Software via ISO, but if it can via Multiman, then Region Restriction is also ignored, which is the only way you will be able to reproduce NTSC PlayStation Software Format on a PAL Console, i know PlayStation2 Format Software must be converted to PS2Classics on HEN, but with PS1 its a straight dump on the HDD.

I have done some tests to answer your question on 4 different systems, a BC PS3 on OFW, BC PS3 on CFW, a non-BC PS3 on CFW, and a 3000 model slim on HEN. Based on my testing:
  1. Region locking on PS1 and PS2 discs are still enforced if you are using OFW.
  2. If you are running CFW, you can play any PS1 disc region free.
  3. If you are running CFW on a BC PS3, you can play any PS2 disc region free
  4. If you are on HEN, you can play any PS1 disc region free as well.
  5. In all CFW and HEN PS3s, you can load backups of PS1 and PS2 through the internal HDD
  6. Burned DVD or CD copies of PS2 and PS1 games do not work on a PS3
TLDR: BC PS3 with CFW (maybe HEN too?) can play discs from PS2 and PS1 of any region. non-BC PS3 with CFW or HEN can only play discs from PS1 of any region.

I hope this answers your question. No in terms of specifics, CFW PS3s can use PS2 and PS1 ISO & BIN CUE files directly from the HDD to boot backups. HEN PS3s to my knowledge can't play PS2 ISOs directly off of the HDD and will need some sort of extra files or modifications before they work. I haven't done any mods recently so I don't really know the exact process to play PS2 ISOs on a HEN PS3. PS1 BIN CUE files should work just fine on a HEN PS3 HDD with no problems.

actually, I think you can play burns with swap magic 3.8. I bought it before buying a phat ps3 many years ago, but I was never able to test it since the system ylod out of the box. I returned it and got a slim.

edit: iirc, 3.6 also works on the ps3. how well they work is unknown to me, since I never had a chance to test it. I still have swap magic 3.8, just no bc ps3.

Good point, I actually forgot about that trick from the PS2 era. However, I heard dual layer PS2 DVD games were not supported with swap magic.

not sure, but that's a possibility. some games like alter code f (the wild arms remake) have been downsized to fit on a dvd. I think the main reason is that the ps2 sometimes struggles with dual layer. that's also back when dual layer dvds were costly.

Actually, burned copies do work on CFW ps3. It's a cobra feature. I could run burned PS2 titles on a CFW BC ps3 without any problem.

Thanks for your detailed response.

So as I understand, it would be beneficial to install HEN on my PAL PS3Ss, since it will allow backwards compatibility with NTSC PS1 games - the function I wasn't able to utilize before.

If you backup your NTSC Titles and launch them via Multiman, i am sure that is possible, but from a straight disc standpoint only with an NTSC Console or a TEST Unit.

HEN is a Homebrew Enabler is not a Custom Firmware, so 70% or less of the CFW features cannot be executed unfortunately.

I only tested a bootleg PS1 disc (not a burned or legit copy) that worked on my PS2 (with MODBO installed). For some reason it didn't boot on the BC PS3 CFW so I thought the copy protection was somehow still active.

After trying an old burned DVD PS2 disc in the BC PS3 CFW, it booted up just fine. O.O

My C model fat is still on OFW, so I can't say for sure if that is the case for PAL systems since all my tests were done on NTSC consoles.

And here you are answering my question just few months ago xD Can i ask you what kind of CFW should I install on my baby or perhaps can you link me vid or guide?
Anyway you are true MVP
