PS2 [Open PS2 Loader] Game Bug Reports

try 0.7 opl very old OPL.
Splinter Cell games on OPL have some problems for run well for example
with gameStar HDD adapter Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and Splinter Cell: Double Agent
Dont boot only Splinter Cell: Double Agent boot on gameStar adapter with OPL 0.7
so I think these games have some bug with opl
for example with Original HDD adapter they all BOOT

Thanks for the reply. I actually just beat Pandora Tomorrow, Chaos Theory, and Double Agent with OPL 0.9.3 stable build not long ago and they had no real problems besides the occasional freeze (maybe it happened once the three games).

I'm actually using an official PlayStation Network adapter not a third party adapter and I have tried OPL 0.7 and 0.5 not long ago but it would still freeze.

The best results so far is 0.8, 0.9, an 0.9.2 OPL versions but will eventually freeze as I have tested so far.

I have also tried out HDLoader 0.8C which I think is the latest one would freeze after roughly 11 loading screens.

This game is a mystery.

I started a brand new game with OPL 0.8 and got further but the game froze on a loading screen in the Oil Refinery Mission which is the 4th mission in the story (about 10 loading screens from new game to Oil Refinery). I believe it was the second loading screen in this Oil Refinery when it froze. So basically I can start a brand new game file and get to this point and it will just freeze. Picture attached below.
splinter-cell-oil-refinery-freeze.png

With the screenshot above after saving or not the screen will just go full blue. It seems that after 10 successful loading screens it will just hang/freeze no matter what on the 11th loading screen. This happens whether it be the credits or loading the next area in mission.

With OPL 0.9.2 I seem to have the same results as with OPL 0.8 and 0.9 and I can beat the Police Station.
With OPL 0.9.3 or latest dev build it will always freeze when I get the mission complete in The Police Station mission.

Long story short OPL 0.8 0.9 and 0.9.2 the game will accept 10 loading screens and the 11th loading screen will freeze. OPL 0.9.3 or dev latest dev build it will accept 5 loading screens but the 6th seems to freeze.

From what I can tell the game will just freeze and the loading the credits screen is the easiest way to trigger this issue but I have no idea if the freezes on credits is the samething during game but they seem to freeze at the same amount attempts I listed above.
@dorian_d, too bad...the freeze of Police Station using a savegame do not happens
in OPL 0.8, 0.9 and 0.9.2?

But yes for the freeze in the Oil Refinery starting a new game?

This is crazy.

I think that the freee of the credits will be related to the other two, simply that it is easier to check the
credits by loading them 11 times than to play a game level 11 times.

Three different freezes that occur in different conditions are too many serious problems for this game.

The strange thing is that nobody ever complained for so many years, perhaps in very old versions of the programs it does work well.

Try the freeze of the Oil Refinery starting a new game with this old versions:

HDLoader Original
OPL 0.7
opl_hdd Beta 2

About "opl_hdd Beta 2" It is only for the HDD, i do not remember well if it was a version of the mini-OPL
in ELF format, or if it was an old version from which most of the functions were removed for have only
HDD support and check the games which crashes with the HDD, several versions were made, i do
not know if modifying the speed of the CDVD or what.
And if i remember correctly it was l_oliveira who made them.

For OPL 0.7 and opl_hdd Beta 2 you need set the HDD and start it manually in the configs.

Best regards.

With OPL 0.8 0.9 and 0.9.2 I can beat the police station no problem and progress, but eventually the game will lock up. If starting a fresh new game that includes the training mission I can get to the Oil Refinery level and will freeze a moment after the most recent picture in my post. It just seems with these older builds it will allow up to 10 consecutive load screens no problem but if we hit the 11th screen the game will hang/freeze.

As for the programs you linked me here is my report.

HDLoader will load the credits 10 consecutive times, but the 11th attempt will freeze.
OPL 0.7 will load the credits 10 consecutive times, but the 11th attempt will freeze with a red screen.
opl_hdd Beta 2.elf will load the credits 10 consecutive times, but the 11th attempt will freeze with a blue screen.

All three allowed me to get to the oil refinery mission no problem but still froze at the picture I attached in a couple posts back. If i start the oil refinery level with 0.8 , 0.9, 0.9.2, hdloader, opl 0.7, and opl_hdd Beta 2.elf I can beat the oil refinery mission problem.

In conclusion, all these programs have the same results but red debug colour in 0.7 opl, and all these programs can reach the oil refinery mission second loading screen but then will freeze. Basically any 10 loading screens consecutive will be fine, but the 11th loading screen will end up being frozen.

@dorian_d, I find this paragraph contradictory and confusing.

What do you mean that you can beat the oil refinery mission problem?
it freezes or not freezes the oil refinery with HDL Original, opl 0.7, and opl_hdd Beta 2?

It hangs in the screenshot you put, and where was that screenshot? right at the end of the oil refinery mission?

Do you mean that with some versions of the programs the game freezes in the middle of the mission,
and with other versions the game freezes at the end of the mission, or what?

Best regards.

I was not specific and I will clarify.

If I start a new game which involves playing/beating the Training, The Poilce Station, and the Defense Ministry missions with these opl files: 0.8 , 0.9, 0.9.2, hdloader, opl 0.7, and opl_hdd Beta 2.elf I can reach to this point in the Oil Refinery with this picture right here. Reaching this point in the picture is from when I started a new game that included 10 successful loading screens prior. Moments after this picture it will freeze (which is the 11th consecutive screen that fails).
splinter-cell-oil-refinery-freeze.png

Now If I go to the mission select screen that I have attached below and choose the oil refinery from the start (no new game or playing the previous levels) I can progress through and complete the level, but will eventually freeze (after 10 consecutive successful loading screens) at different point in the game or level. 11th attempt is the magic number here with these older OPLs that will freeze.
image.png

I will provide another example. Let's say I start the CIA HQ level and after progressing through more of the game and after 10 successful loading screens, on the 11th loading screen the game will freeze.

The long and short of it is that the freezing issue starts when you begin your game session at any point. Once we hit the 11th loading screen of any part in the game boom games locks up/freezes.

I hope this answers your question.

The long and short of this is that this freezing issue does not matter where you start (new game, a specific mission). In any game session it will freeze after 10 successful loading screens with OPL files and HDloader I listed above no matter the location or mission. Once we hit the 11th loading screen of any part in the game boom games locks up/freezes.
@dorian_d, summarizing:

With internal HDD and USB:

With OPL 0.9.3 and later:

Freezes using the save game at the end of the Police Station mission.
Freezes starting a new game in the Oil Refinery mission after completing it at a different point in the game.
Freezes loading the credits screen 6 times.

The game will freeze after 5 successful loading screens no matter the location or mission.
Once we hit the 6 loading screen of any part in the game boom games locks up / freezes.

With OPL 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, 0.9.2, opl_hdd Beta 2.elf, & HDLoader.

Not freezes using the save game at the end of the Police Station mission.
Freezes starting a new game in the Oil Refinery mission after completing it at a different point in the game.
Freezes loading the credits screen 11 times.

The game will freeze after 10 successful loading screens no matter the location or mission.
Once we hit the 11th loading screen of any part in the game boom games locks up / freezes.

And what about SMB loading? does the same happen with SMB and OPL 0.9.2 for example?

Best regards.

With OPL 0.9.3 and later:

Starting a new game will result in a freeze in the police station level ✔️
If starting from police station mission it can be completed but next loading screen for next level/cutscene will freeze (loading screen number 6)
Accessing Credits screen 6 times will result in a freeze.✔️
Game will freeze at any progression/loading new area after 6 times ✔️

With OPL 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, 0.9.2, opl_hdd Beta 2.elf, & HDLoader:

- Can complete the police station by choosing Mission select - no freezing and the next level/cutscene will properly load ✔️
- Starting a new game first freeze will occur at oil refinery mission's beginning area (new game to this stage is 10+ loading screens) ✔️
- Freezes when loading the credits screen 11 times ✔️
The game will freeze after 10 successful loading screens no matter the location or mission.✔️
Once we hit the 11th loading screen of any part in the game locks up / freezes.✔️

From limited amount testing with 0.9.2 with SMB the game loads up but when I start a new game or load any mission all I see is a black screen. I waited 5 minutes and nothing happened.

Pretty much how I sum it up.

Once again thank you El_Patas and the community for checking in on this.

@dorian_d, from what you say it looks that the game is just not compatible at all loaded
through SMB.

I tested the game with a modified speed of 900Ks from Mode 1, and also the credits freezes, then it
seems that the problem is not related about the CDVD reads.

The only thing left to check is to load the PAL version, although i don't think it will have a
different result than the US version.

You found one of the few games which still are not compatibles with the internal HDD, and also
not compatible with USB&SMB, like recently Tales of the Abyss.

Without a developer with skills of debugging games and who likes spend time on debugging for
find and fix the problems, i'm afraid that the only way for play properly them it is playing from disc.

Thank you very much for all your time and exhaustive tests.

This game has to be put on the first page of the thread in the list of problematic games.

Best regards.

@jolek, thank you very much. :adoration:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In this past weeks i have continued testing and researching the Tales of the Abys game, and i want
to record it here in case it can be of use to a developer.

I tested the game with more speeds than Mode 1 but it freezed.
I used the opl_hdd Beta 2.elf & HDLoader and it was freezed too.

So i tested the game on the PCSX2 emulator using the save game, and the game works fine,
music works fine in the field and game doesn't freeze.

I looked up information about the past of this game on the PCSX2 and found that before it worked well, it also
had SFX / Music / Freezes related issues.

Specifically on the years 2010/2011 a PCSX2 developer commented that the sound related freezes are
caused by CDVD reads overwriting IOP memory:

https://forums.pcsx2.net/Thread-PCSX2-bug-s?page=2

https://forums.pcsx2.net/Thread-Tales-of-the-Abyss-Sound-Effects-Issue

So i thought it would be interesting to be able to run the game using the OPL on the PCSX2, to see if
problems occur and use the debug option of the PCSX2.

I have managed to successfully load games with the OPL in the PCSX2 in USB mode thanks to a USB plugin
that exists for the PCSX2, (using the "ima" format for creating the game image and files).

But unfortunately there is a limitation of 2GB when i use the Ultraiso to create the image in "ima" format, i
don't know if this limitation is given by the USB plugin or by the "ima" format itself.

And since the game is 3.76 GB in size, i can't test this game through OPL in PCSX2.

I asked the developer of the PCSX2 to find out how they fixed the CDVD problems of this game, and he
answered me the following:
"Problems like these happen when the game's coders were not careful enough with their asset streaming vs
accessing them.

The fix to this is to replicate the delays of a real drive in as good detail as possible.
This means that any seeks, linear read times and all the spindle control times factor in to a final delay for a
seek + read action.
Depending on what options you have in OPL to affect any of the emulated timings, you need to experiment to
find which kind of action requires which delay to make the game work. "

It is clearly that this game is affected about what is explained here, and i hope this helps to any developer in
any way to find a future fix for OPL.

Searching more info, i found also that the PS2 emulation for PS3:

https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/PS2_Emulation#Inside_ps2_emu.self

And for PS4:

https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps4/PS2_Emulation#Game_ID.2FDiscID_in_PS20220WD20050620.crack

They have marked Tales of the Abyss in the last table with patches or fixes with:

0X0A = CDVD_READ_DELAY

Ace Combat 5 also appears with this command of 0X0A, and this game have a freeze in the OPL.
They don't have Tales of Legendia, but this game also have music issues in the world map on the OPL, and
maybe have the same cause problem as Tales of the Abyss.

Best regards.

Also briefings music is missing. However everything works perfectly with OPL 0.9.2 on that game.
@Peppe90, do you mean that the Ace Combat 5 is broken after the OPL0.9.2?

In which mission the briefing music is missing and the FMV video freezes?

This happens only with SMB, or also with the internal HDD and USB?

Best regards.

It isn't completely broken. It is playable but briefing music (always, no matter the mission) is absent.

It also freezes on some missions. It's been a long time, but I remember a Ps2-Home user stating that it was possible to avoid the freezing not skipping any FMV (skipping FMVs you get the first freeze at mission 6 start if I correctly remember).

It should be tested again if there's the need to a more accurate analysis, but I currently can't find much free time this period.

I don't remember if I tested it also from USB but most probably yes. I can confirm the issue is present from HDD.

Also see here: https://www.ps2-home.com/forum/page/opl-game-compatibility-list-A
(NOTE: there's no need for any MODE 6 from HDD, VMC works perfectly. Probably it was a problem with some specific rev.)

The briefing music works in the OPL 0.9.2, or not?
