PS3 PS2 Classics blacks screen and shuts down PS3

Hello, I've been having an issue trying to play any ps2 game on a modded ps3 (more details below), because whenever I try to play any ps2 game (including og PS2 Classics games like Shinobi and God Hand, which should work on all PS3s as far as I know, ruling out any compatibility issue) I get a black screen for a while, and then it turns off the console.

Worst part is, I've actually managed to make them work, once, after altering the fan speed on webMAN (If I recall correctly I just changed the PS2 fan speed to 100% per a friend's suggestion), and it actually worked, I got the black screen but after a little while the game actually started working like supposed to (this I believe, should also rule out any issue with the HDMI), even more incredible, the fan didn't actually change it's speed (I had it at 80% for PS2 games before, and it could be heard very clearly, however it was nice and silent the whole way through)
That occasion I tested that both Shinobi, God Hand and Gungrave (previously converted to pkg with PS2Classics GUI) worked.

Yet, the following day, without changing any setting I'm back to square one an having the same issue again (I have since tried messing around with pretty much every fan speed setting in webMAN without results)

I doubt it's an overheating problem since it can run PS3 games no problem and like I said before, it actually ran a PS2 game without issue

I have a FAT PS3
System Version is 4.89 HFW
HEN 3.1.1
webMAN 1.47.31
I have both ManaGunz and PS2 Classics Manager installed although I never even touched them
I have PS2 upscaling and related settings disabled

If anybody got a fix, I would strongly appreciate it

Delete /dev_hdd0/tmp/wm_config.bin
Restart the console and try mounting the game again.

Or uninstall webMAN MOD then reinstall it again.

If the problem persists, try reinstalling HFW+HEN.

I was a bit too quick to sing victory, the first time it worked without issue, but any attempt after that failed, not even reinstalling webman solve the problem

Read my post again... I gave you various options if deleting the config doesn't work.

Hi if u using hen and u want to play ps2 classics or ps1 u should download hen version of games (download original games from sony servers not moded games)

Sorry for not being clear enough in the following answer, but I did all of that (Deleted the config, reinstalled Webman mod, and reinstalled HFW and HEN).
It only worked the first time when I deleted the config (and just once), I have also tried playing without Webman mod installed but still not dice

Shinobi and God Hand are games downloaded from Sony's servers, and "modded" ps1 games work without issue

I've managed it to make it work again, this time twice in a row!
I'm honestly starting to think that it works randomly, I didn't do anything differently than how I would normally play, yet they worked perfectly (even non-PSN games like Gungrave, and Shadow Hearts), at first I thought that it was because I've played specific games (DmC in the DmC HD Collection and Crash Warped), specially since it worked again (after shutting down the PS3 to see if it worked again), but today I had no dice.

If there was one thing of note however, is that, after exiting a PS2 game (while they were working), I needed to re-enable HEN, otherwise I would the "error during startup" error (code 80029530 for PS2 Games and 80028F17 for PSX Games), but other than that they were working perfectly fine yesterday.

I've honest to god, have no idea what makes them work, it seems to be completely random, without any noticeable pattern, perhaps they need a specific temperature to work? or have the console turned on for X hours? I have no idea, neither rebuilding the database, checking the file system, deleting webman's config, re-installing webman, HFW and HEN makes it works, it's just random...

Mine did this quite a bit years ago. Never found out the exact cause. If I formatted the HDD and reinstall CFW it would work for quite a while. But out of the blue it would switch to PS2 mode, screen flickers for a second then hangs on a black screen till a hard power off. Then I could rebuild the database a few times would "fix" it for a brief period of time. Eventually I had to format to get them working again. Ran SMART test and new drives but kept doing it. Still have that problematic CECH-2001A

Alright, I have been doing some tests and managed it to make it work again, in fact, I believe I found a "solution"

The "solution" in question consists in playing (or really, just leaving it on) Devil May Cry in the DmC HD Collection for hours (+3), I initially though this confirmed my suspicion that they only work at a specific temperature range, but upon checking it, it's not different than the usual temperature (around 58 - 60 degrees), so at least I can (?) "confirm" that it's not the case.
I had previously re-installed PS2 Licenses and configs, and updated pkgi as well, but that didn't seem to have an effect, playing DMC did for some reason.

It has worked three times in a row, which leads me to believe I am onto something, but further testing is required to see if this is just a coincidence. The only difference between the times that it worked before is that the PS3 shuts down whenever I try to exit the game.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, I ran some tests and the above method didn't work, I think I'm just gonna backup my data somewhere else and format it

Hi all,

fun fact I am having the same problems, and it's really driving me crazy:

kind of the same setup:
CECHCxx Fat PS3 Software EE so backwards compatible machine with SSD
It plays PS1,PS2,PS3 games from drive fine, recently repasted no overheat
It plays PS1 cue/bin and PS3 iso from HDD fine
HFW_4.89.1_littlebalup as the CFW toolset currently no available
(2 x Times installed)

Installed:
HEN 3.1.1
webMANMOD webMAN_MOD_1.47.42_Installer.pkg.474.v1.47.42_brewology_com
+ addons {
PS2_Classics_Launcher.pkg.490.v1.00_brewology_com
PS2CONFIG_20221106.pkg.991.v1.01_brewology_com
ROMS_PKG_Launcher.pkg.624.v1.20_brewology_com
}

AND I am having the same problem:
I tried two games James Bond 007 : NightFire and Harry Potter (PAL) and the Chamber of Secrets (NTSC)

I took ISO or BIN.CUE files converted with ps2classics_GUI_2.2.3 to SLES-51192.BIN.ENC (Harry Potter in this case)
Copy over FTP to /dev_hdd0/PS2ISO/SLES-51192.BIN.ENC
It shows up in webMAN, able to mount it, start PS2 Classics Placeholder AND black screen ONE beep, RED light, so general error

I tried to load the PS2 Classic Placeholder without mounted .BIN.ENC file, which should show me Tetris, but same error

Weird thing, the system automatically copied the SLES-51192.BIN.ENC.CONFIG file next to .BIN.ENC file.

Does anyone know how to debug this? If there's a log file somewhere at least? Been fighting with this issue myself for quite a while and I think I'm on to something; First of all it's not a temp issue. I guarantee it's not on my machines. Sometimes I can successfully boot several PS2 isos in a row and play without errors using multiman or webman mod and PS2 games with syscon (default fan behavior) sees a temp of around mid 60 degrees Celsius on both the CPU and GPU. Heaviest PS3 games run at the normal and good temps of around 72-74 with the fan not having to ramp up.

With that out of the way I've found a way to successfully boot ps2 isos EVERY time on my PS3 Slim by replacing the default ps2 netemu with a "HDD browser" version found in for example the app known as "ultimate toolbox" that allows you to easily install one or the other. The problem with the HDD browser version of the emulator is that you can't access or use the virtual memory cards despite them being created and mounted to a virtual memory card slot. So while you can play just fine this way you won't be able to save. So I'm guessing the shutdown issue when trying to boot ps2 isos stems from an issue with the virtual memory cards. Either from the emulator, webman mod and/or a combination with the CFW. I've tried this on two of the last versions of Rebug, Evilnat and Ferrox all having the same results. With or without PS2 configs installed.

Another possible culprit could be the type of storage drive you use. Swapped my SSD to an old 5400rpm HDD just now and managed to boot 2 different ps2 games from isos 5 times in a row w/o restarting the system. Using the same CFW and version of wmMOD on both drives. Swapped back to the SSD and now it's a very unreliable story of being able to boot PS2 games again.

I personally only know of one PS3 game in JB folder/iso format that doesn't like the default behaviour of an SSD; Armored Core V which doesn't play any music if the "BD emulator transfer pacing" is set to "HDD native" (available in the xmb debug settings with the DEX debug menu type enabled), but works perfectly with the other option being similar to the real BD drive speed. This does not make a difference in this case of the PS2 isos shutting the system down unfortunately.

Race condition in the emulator triggering the shutdown thanks to higher read/access speeds from an SSD?

sorry i'm having a somewhat similar case my cecha01 all of a sudden has started to shut down when playing vice city stories ps2 classics randomly at times, the fan is at 40% speed also the temp is at 64 and finally other ps2 classics and iso have no crashes, what would resolve this issue

I know that this thread is a bit old, but can't this be fixed by a CFW update?

I have read several threads on Reddit, forums and Facebook posts, and everything points to the storage.

If the PS3 has a SSD, 80% of the time the console is loading a PS2 game (installed package, not ISO) the system goes to a black screen and shuts down, with the power LED going out w/o beeps, and there is no error upon turning it back on. For some reason this only happens when connected to a CRT TV in 480i resolution. HDMI is fine.

Units with the system installed on NAND (such as reported by #348791) are not safe from the issue either.
