As someone whos dealt with CFS/ME that can render me bedbound or housebound during flares, I approve.
You can use a PS3 server application if your pc has enough horsepower to transcode on the fly and a few of these are about. Or transcode your set to H.264, AAC, MP4 container (or use Movian, you can then use MKV containers with H264, opus audio, and even codecs like VP9 at lower resolutions but not AV1 or H.265.
For games, install them to the HDD or use a disc or use an ethernet cable. The PS3s WiFi network adapter does not suit playing games over the air and will be much slower. The HDD will have the best performance.
PS3s can also use smb v1, but... Make sure you if you are thinking of going the smb route do not use smb v1. It is simply not worth the security risk, it has exploits that allow full system access and I have seen these used against NAS devices in the wild. Not worth the convenience. Many gamers might say this is okay, but I 100% would not do this and the exploits are well documented. I believe the WannaCry ransomware used this as one vector to get in.
