PS3 PS3 CECH-2501A won’t spin

My PS3 console model is 2501A, and the motherboard model is JSD-001. Today, I discovered that the Blu-ray drive was not spinning, although the disc could still be properly loaded and ejected. I initially suspected a problem with the BD drive, so I replaced the entire BD drive assembly with a fully functional one. However, the issue persisted. Once the disc is fully loaded, the drive makes a "click" sound and then does nothing—no spinning at all, though the disc can still be ejected normally.

I removed the cover of the BD drive to observe its mechanism. I could see the disc being loaded completely, followed by a "click" sound, after which there was no further activity. The drive never spins, even though it can still eject the disc normally. I tried swapping several BD drives of the same model, but the same issue persisted, confirming that the problem is not with the drive itself.

This led me to suspect a motherboard issue. According to the official repair manual, the BD drive's controller chip is the BD7979EFV, so I replaced it. The first replacement yielded no results—the BD drive was completely unresponsive, with no disc loading activity, as if it wasn't connected at all. I assumed the chip I installed was faulty, so I replaced it again. This time, the drive could load discs again, which gave me hope, but the issue reverted to the original state. The drive made a "click" sound and then did nothing.

I'm quite frustrated and puzzled. What could be causing this problem? I've even considered that it might be an issue with the main integrated chip, CXD5131R-1. I've tried everything I could think of, but nothing has worked.so I need to help.

Have you tried remarry after replacing the control chip? Phat models in this case generally point to a bad laser lens.

I did not try to remarry, because the 25 model console can directly change the drive to play the game, so I did not try to remarry, if you have experience, then I try to remarry, but even if remarried successfully, then the drive can move up? The drive's not working at all right now

The 25 series has integrated the optical drive daughter board on the motherboard. Does the control IC you replaced contain the key? You can try to remarry it in CFW, which is a relatively simple process.

Thank you very much for your suggestion, I plan to try it. I removed the CXD5131-R-1 chip of the same model from the optical drive sub-version of model 2000, I don't know whether it has a key or not, but your suggestion reminds me to make a new attempt, thank you.

I'm not sure if it includes a key, but you can try it out since there's no soldering or anything like that involved.

Thank you, my friend! I followed your method and successfully brought it back to life. I used the CFW 4.91 No BD.pup firmware, and it worked perfectly—absolutely amazing! Although it can only run games in folder format, it's already great.

Using noBD firmware is also a method. If it can be repaired, it is of course a better choice:D

you can make nobd firmware with mfw builder. it says to click both nobd patches as well as zecoxao's patch, so three patches in all, not hard. let us know if you have problems. I'm pretty sure nobd firmware works even if you have a working bd drive. it's just suggested you remarry a drive, because a nonworking bd drive has restrictions on no bd firmware, like not being able to play iso games or something.
