ADMIN EDIT:

  • On mobile try turning your phone into landscape mode for better results.

very helpful for me as i've never managed to get my hands on a CFW-able model, although i'm very happy with HEN.
thanks.

So not sure if you wanna add it but CECH-250X & up models still work fine with a bad BD drive as they do not have the daughter board. Also fixed a small typo that says PS3JEN @STLcardsWS

hen is it safer to play online than CFW?

The only "safe" way is with no hacks. Luckily most of the games that caused bans are offline aside from the last two COD games. That being said if you have a HEN only system do not enable it to play safely. As for CFW I used System Update Debug to allow me to swap from a CFW to a dual boot OFW for online play.

do the ps2 compatible models reboot when launching a ps2 disc/iso or is it just when the firmware emu is used(as on HEN)?
i have often wondered why the ps2 is the oddball when it comes to playing the games on ps3.i'm aware the ps2 capability was
added later so they could resell games you've already purchased for later models, just curious to know why it reboots on ps2 install
and not,say,a PSP install?

BC PS3s, at least when using CFW, do not reboot when playing PS2 games (original discs or backups) but the controller usually disconnects and you need to press the PS button again. The reason is that it's being virtually detached from the PS3 and attached to the PS2 hardware.

thanks for the info.had a read about the EE processor and i'm guessing the ps2 games must run radically different than the other
sony platform games, which would explain much.many thanks.

Yes, the fully backwards compatible PS3s (CECHA and CECHB) actually have most of the PS2 hardware inside them, including the EE and GS (similar to how the PS2 had PS1 hardware for backwards compatibility). Semi-BC PS3 models (CECHC and CECHE) don't have the EE but still have the GS and some other minor PS2-related chips. When you play a PS2 game on a BC PS3 the PS2 hardware "takes over" certain peripherals, e.g., controllers, USB ports, network etc., which may appear as though your console's rebooting.

excellent, thanks for the answers.the reason i ask all this is i often wondered how HEN (i have a non-bc slim and a superslim)managed to stay enabled during a reboot.but i suppose its not a "proper" reboot.still impressive either way.

but is 4.89.1 official? can I play online safely with HEN not activated?
The only truly safe way of playing on PSN is getting a second PS3 and not modding it. If you make sure not to play on PSN with HEN enabled (and you never screw up) it would be difficult for Sony to detect HEN, probably impossible from the server side, however I've heard about cases where the game itself actively scanned the files on the console and reported to PSN if it found any homebrew installed, leading to bans. I think it was GTA V but don't catch me here. Also there might be methods that we're not aware of.
It's not common but there have been cases of people getting banned even though they have disabled syscalls / not enabled HEN. If you want to be on the safe side just buy a cheap 2nd hand superslim and keep it on OFW.
