PS3 PS3 First time Jailbreak

Hello, I have a fat ps3 on fw 3.7.3 and I cant see to find any videos recent enough to trust that I wont brick my device. Im unsure whether I need to update to the latest official fw before attmepting to jailbreak mine or if theres something I can do now. Im also unsure what custom fw to install as there are so many options. I just want to ensure I have the best and most recent process to follow before I blindly follow an outdated guide.

I also would like to upgrade the HDD which I know how to do but unsure if I can just install the cfw when I do that or if that needs to be done after an official fw was installed on that as well.

For firmware 3.73 on FAT, CFW installation
  • Past 3.55 FW, so you can't just install a CFW PUP directly, an exploit to the flash is needed first.
  • There are two options to exploit the flash for a CFW install
    • bguerville's PS3 Toolset - Supports upto 4.92 (4.93 is not supported)
      • Regarded as the safer tool, has better checks and brick prevention.
    • Flash Writer Tool (unofficial) - Supports 4.93 (latest)
      • Has been used by many with success but is more susceptible to errors and potential bricks, while low can happen in rare circumstances

Both tools were developed originally by bguerville, The Flash Writer tool was discontinued by bguerville and replaced with the PS3 Toolset . Flash writer was laster brought back (unofficially by other devs) as a backup solution when ps3 toolset is not available online (as its an online tool, visited from the PS3 web browser) and also to serve as an offline version.

So I would update to a firmware that works with the PS3 toolset (4.92 being the latest)
Download 4.92 OFW and update via USB storage media - Do not update to latest 4.93

Thank you for the reply. Just so I understand you recommend upgrading to the official fw 4.92 using some archive link I assume. After that I can follow either of the 2 recommendations for installing cfw but preferably bguerville's PS3 Toolset.

I also would imagine that since I want to upgrade to I HDD, I can install the official 4.92 right after doing that through usb safemode?
