ps3 iso vs jb folder anyone do any benchmarks maybe a game with alot of loading to see if having it in iso helps.

PKG is second since its an official install, and doesn't have compatibility issues.
JB folder is the worst.
i dont think there is a difference between PKG and JB folder, since they are plain files in a folder.

Assassin's creed revelations only works as JB folder. As ISO you would get a black screen and a console freeze when you start it. So i think that some games would have compatibility issues as ISO. I usually use isos, or JB folder if i use mods or face compatibility issues. I never use pkg, only if it's a pkg only game like resident evil 4.
i think something is wrong with you iso. as long as they are properly ripped, an iso is second only to an original disc being in the drive.

I prefer pkg for the convenience of having the games in the main menu of the console. 100% compatibility assured. And secondly (not necessarily second, since it is as good as pkg) the ISO format. Games like God of War 3 never came out in digital format (pkg), so the ISO format rules. I recommend ISOs from an external HDD/SDD.

Nah you have to add a folder named ASSASSIN_ISO and it works fine. It's an Ubisoft issue as it only effects their games.

Out of interest, which AC games does it affect do you know? I have AC: Brotherhood which I ripped using makeps3iso in the PS3 ISO Tools GUI and had no such issue regarding an additional folder.

Only pirated versions are affected with this problem. I also have the original dvds, for example the backup of a genuine brotherhood copy backed up using multiman on the same console works normal, but the illegal scene copy i tried required that fix, same for other illegal ac games backups as far as i saw online, but i haven't tested that myself. Or maybe it could be, that a backup would only work without such a fix, only on the same console which had been used to backup the game... the outcome could be different if backed up using a computer, who knows... I hope these details don't get me into any troubles because i know that discussing piracy is illegal here. I apologize for any inconveniences.
No, it's not because of that. That issue is only in the pirated games which got leaked days before official release like mamy ps3 games at that time. If i am not mistakes, these missing folders or sometimes files were mistakes from the release group.
Edit: i have the original disc, i use multiman for backup. I tried multiple times, but the same outcome. It was painful hearing my ps3 blue ray drive getting a heavy workout, because i play backups to reserve the lifespan of my ps3 disc drive.

Perhaps it's an issue with the evilnat cfw? In previous releases, there used to be a black screen isuue in some wwe games.
that was due to cobra using too much memory, IIRC. @habib told Evilnat how to fix it and it shouldn't be a problem now.

ASSASSIN_ISO folder is used for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag to enable DLC content that not normally appearing in-game after already being previously installed from PS store
I'm not sure if it's a 1-time authentication issue with uplay or issues relating to ubisoft servers but last I knew multiplayer was still accessible a year or so ago.

anyone do a benchmark on load time?
it would not be consistent overall. maybe pkg's are usually faster, but many discs install some data to the hard drive to make some loading faster. some disc games may even load data in the background (from the disc) before it is needed in order to avoid or minimize loading screens.
playing from iso file may not make a difference (compared to physical disc) for some games. they may be timed to read the data at a fixed rate because the developers knew the disc was going to take a certain amount of time to read the data. they just may not ask for more data untill they think enough time has passed for the last read to be complete.
there are just too many factors at play to make a general assumption.
The benchmark would have subjective results due many factors like @Coro mentioned.
There are some known factors that affect the load time:
1- The load time depends much of the type of HDD (SSD > SSHD > HDD). Also the spin speed (7200 > 5400 RPM) and cache size.
2- Internal HDD usually have better load times than external USB drives. However it could not be true if using SSD for USB drives and the internal storage is an electro-mechanical HDD.
3- The disk fragmentation has a large effect on the speed of HDD. It's recommended to defragment the external HDD (non-SSD).
4- If the game contains hundreds or thousands of files it will be definitely slower on JB folder or PSN package format than ISO.
5- Many games install content to internal HDD. So for these games the load time will be practically the same no matter the format.
6- Other factors that affect the speed include: bad sectors, HDD controller of the enclosure, USB 1.1 vs 3.0, etc.
In general, ISO format should have better performance because the data is read in sectors instead of individual files.
